LA SORPRESA DELL'ANNO

Quest'anno ho avuto per puro caso una pianta di Pomodoro Spagnoletta del Golfo di Gaeta e di Formia, conosciuto anche come Pomodoro Casalino (qui e qui) . A lui va l'Oscar dei miei pomodori 2017.

La pianta ha avuto, e sta ancora avendo, una crescita stentata, ma sta producendo frutti belli e saporiti. La mia amica ortolana Claudia dice che la pianta probabilmente ha deciso di concentrarsi solo sui frutti a scapito del suo aspetto esteriore.

THE SURPRISE OF THE YEAR

This year I have had by sheer chance a Spagnoletta Tomato plant, also known as Casalino Tomato (here and here). It has won the Oscar of my 2017 tomatoes. It is juicy and for this very suitable to make sauce for fish dishes.

The plant has had a stunted growth. Actually, it's still having a scrubby growth. My gardener friend Claudia says that the plant has decided to give all its energy to its fruits to the detriment of its outward appearance.

AGGIORNAMENTO SUL CAROSELLO PELOSELLO

Altra scoperta sul Carosello Pelosello: se raccolto intorno ai 150 grammi, l'amarezza del frutto scompare quasi completamente. Resta localizzato, in misura minima, principalmente nell'estremità inferiore. L'ho scoperto due giorni fa raccogliendo l'ultimo frutto della stagione.

CAROSELLO PELOSELLO UPDATE

Another relevation about the Carosello Pelosello: if harvested when it weighs around 150 grams, the fruit bitterness disappears almost completely. It is mainly restricted to the lower end. I found this out two days ago picking the last fruit of the season (pics 1 and 2).

A determining factor was this link that Professor Pietro Santamaria sent to me. Professor Santamaria teaches at the Agricultural Science Faculty of Bari University and is administrator of the BiodiverSO site. He is the top expert of the Apulian agricultural biodiversity. 

UN CAROSELLO SEMPRE PIÙ STRANO

Innanzitutto, un doveroso chiarimento sul nome. L'ho sempre chiamato Polisello perché Angelo Passalacqua di amicidellortodue lo definisce così in un suo post. In realtà, il suo nome nel dialetto locale è Pilusella, più o meno Pelosello in italiano. Mi chiedo come sia venuto fuori Polisello... D'ora in avanti si parlerà di Pilusella mentre il mio ibrido prenderà il nome italianizzato di Pelosello per distinguerlo dall'originale.
Come ho già scritto in un altro post, dopo i primi frutti, la mia pianta di Pelosello ha prodotto peponidi amarissimi. E questo è insolito per un carosello. Qualche giorno fa ne ho raccolto uno di 350 grammi. Troppo grosso. Succede, a volte, che i frutti di caroselli sfuggano alla vista di chi li coltiva: la loro mimetizzazione con le foglie è spesso perfetta.

Magari ho scoperto l'acqua calda, ma una volta tolti semi e placenta, l'amarezza scompare e il sapore di questo questo ibrido è lo stesso della Pilusella.

Intanto sono quasi pronti i semi per il Pelosello dell'anno prossimo. Quante generazioni saranno necessarie per disibridarlo?

A WEIRDER AND WEIRDER CAROSELLO

First of all, a due clarification about its name. I've always called it Polisello because Angelo Passalacqua from his blog amicidellortodue gave it this name. In fact, its name in local dialect is Pilusella, more or less Pelosello in Italian, that is "something covered with fuzz". I wonder how the name Polisello has come out...

From now on the Carosello Polisello will become Pilusella whereas my hybrid will be called Pelosello to distinguish it from the original strain.

As I wrote in an another post, after harvesting the first fruits, my Pelosello vine has yielded very bitter pepos. And this is very unusual for carosellos. A few days ago, I picked a 350 gram fruit (pics 1 to 3). Too big. It sometimes happens that carosellos escape the gardener's sight: their camouflage with leaves is often perfect. 

Perhaps I'm saying something everybody already knows, but if you remove seeds and placenta (pic 4), bitterness disappears and the taste of this hybrid is the same as Pilusella.

In the meantime the seeds of Pelosello for next year are ripening (pic 5). How many generations will be necessary to dehybridize it?

...consideravo la Cornucopia del Nord il più gustoso dei pomodori mai coltivati sui miei balconi. Qualcuno, però, mi deve spiegare perché questa varietà è stata chiamata così: i suoi frutti sono tondeggianti, lisci o, qualche volta, leggermente costoluti. Capisco la parola Nord, visto che questo pomodoro non ama molto il sole diretto e può essere coltivato in periodi freschi. Ma Cornucopia? È anche vero che i nomi prima o poi finiscono e occorre pur inventarsi qualcosa.

Direi che il tentativo con il Pomodoro Spagnoletta di Gaeta sia riuscito (qui e qui). I semi per l'anno prossimo ci sono già: sarà uno dei sorvegliati speciali. Ho letto da qualche parte che soffre di marciume apicale. Invece, fortunatamente, così non è stato, almeno per quest'anno.

Un fallimento: la Melanzana Claveria Long Purple. Avrei dovuto rinvasarlo in un vaso più capiente, ma la sua condanna è stata la mia goffaggine: volevo eliminare gli insetti strofinando le foglie con un vecchio spazzolino da denti imbevuto in acqua e bicarbonato. Ecco il risultato finale.

THIS WEEK'S BEST PICTURES

Here you are a few photos taken during the last days. Before meeting the Black Cherry (pic 1), I considered the Cornucopia del Nord (pic 2) the tastiest tomato ever cultivated on my balconies. But someone has to explain to me why this variety was named like this: its fruits are roundish, smooth, sometimes slightly ribbed. I understand the word Nord (North in English), given that this tomato doesn't love the direct sun and can also be cultivated in cool seasons. But why Cornucopia? Well, it's also true that sooner or later names run out and you have to come up with some way of calling things.

Photos 3 and 4 spotlight an old friend, the dwarf tomato Hahms Gelbe Tofttomate, a yellow strain.

I would say that my attempt with Spagnoletta Gaeta Tomato (here and here) was successful (pics 4 and 5). I also saved seeds for next year: it will be under special surveillance. I read somewhere that it isn't very resistant to blossom-end rot; fortunately, it wasn't the case with my plant.

Though powdery mildew is always there, carosello vines have been yelding reasonable amount of crops. On pic 7 is a big pear-shaped Carosello Bianco Leccese: 345 grams. Photos 8 and 9 show two Carosello Manduria fruits; seeds come from a 2015 vine. On pic 10 is the Carosello Massafra Round cultivated in the condominial greenery: I hope it will give me fresh seeds for 2018 season.

Picture 11 shows some Red Ribbed Eggplant fruits still unripe.

Claveria Long Purple Eggplant has been a failure (pic 12). I should have repotted it in a more capacious container, but its death sentence was caused by a blunder of mine: I wanted to get rid of insects using an old toothbrush soaked in water and bicarbonate. The final result was a disaster.

MACCHÉ ORTO SUL BALCONE! VOGLIO UN ORTO VERO!

Nel post di ieri ho parlato del Carosello Tondo di Massafra condominiale utilizzando delle foto che avevo scattato due giorni prima. Ieri mattina ho voluto dare un'altra occhiata e ho trovato quattro magnifici frutti pronti da raccogliere, 320 grammi il più grosso; 242 grammi il più piccolo. In due giorni erano cresciuti moltissimo. Mi è venuto un gran desiderio di avere di nuovo un orto in piena terra.

Questa pianta ha probabilmente trovato una posizione ideale prendendo il sole dalle 11,00 alle 17,00, le ore migliori della giornata. Il fatto che mi meraviglia è che, pur bagnata ogni sera dal sistema di irrigazione automatica, non c'è traccia né di oidio né di insetti nocivi.

FORGET ABOUT THE BALCONY GARDEN. I WANT A REAL GARDEN!

In yesterday's post I talked about the Carosello Massafra Round using a few pictures taken two days before. Yesterday morning I wanted to have a look again and found four wonderful fruits ready to be harvested, 320 grams the biggest; 242 grams the smallest. During the last two days they had grown up very much. I was seized with a desire to have a garden in an open ground again.

This vine has probably found a perfect position catching the sun from 11,00 to 17,00, the best hours of the day. I'm surprised that there's no trace of  powdery mildew or pests, though it's watered every evening by the automatic irrigation system.

The 6th June hailstorm had reduced the condominial Carosello Massafra Round in bad condition (pic 1), but it has recovered (pic 2) and now some fruits are ready to be harvested (pic 3)!

CAROSELLO DAY

Ieri grande raccolto di caroselli: tre Peloselli (variante del Polisello), tre Manduria, un Tondo Massafrese e un Barese.

Sono rimasto deluso dai Peloselli. Due dei tre sono risultati amarissimi: succede negli incroci tra cucurbitacee. Solo quello più grosso al centro della foto è risultato privo di amarezza. Finora metà degli otto frutti raccolti sono risultati amari.

Quanto a quello che doveva essere un pianta di Carosello Tondo di Manduria (qui), ora ho la certezza che si tratta di un Carosello di Manduria: nella foto a destra un suo frutto in compagnia di un altro Carosello di Manduria. È evidente che si tratta della stessa varietà.

CAROSELLO DAY

Yesterday a bountiful harvest of carosellos: three Peloselli (variant of Polisello), three Manduria, one Massafrese Round and one Barese (pic 1).

I was disappointed by Peloselli. Two out of the three (pic 2) turned out to be very bitter: it happens in crossbreeding among cucurbitaceae. Only the one in the middle on pic 2 worked out to be without that unpleasant bitter taste. So far half of eight fruits harvested have been bitter.

As regards the vine that was supposed to be a Carosello Manduria Round (here), I'm now sure it's a Carosello Manduria: on the right on picture 3 is a fruit from its vine along with another Carosello Manduria. It's manifest they belong to the same variety.

IL RACCOLTO DI OGGI

Oggi un carosello nuovo: il Carosello Bianco Leccese, detto anche Spuredda Bianca Leccese. In realtà, è stato uno dei primi caroselli che ho coltivato sui miei balconi, ma non ne ho ancora parlato in questo blog.

Questa varietà è un po' in ritardo rispetto alle altre, ma la pianta è piena di piccoli frutti e questo mi fa ben sperare. È un carosello dalla consistenza molto morbida, anche se questo primo frutto stagionale lo era meno del solito. Comunque ben 320 grammi e semi piccolissimi, il che vale a dire che non ho buttato via niente.

Era un po' triste raccoglierlo da solo: gli hanno fatto compagnia un Carosello di Manduria e un Carosello Barese.

TODAY'S HARVEST

Today a new carosello: the Carosello Leccese White, also called Spuredda Leccese White. Actually, it was one of the first carosellos I cultivated on my balconies, but I haven't talked about it on this blog yet (pic. 1).

This strain is a little late if compared with the growth of the other ones, but the vine is full with small fruits: this makes me hope for the best. It's a carosello with a soft texture, though this first fruit of the season was less than usual. Anyway, it weighed 320 grams with tiny seeds, which means that I didn't waste anything (pic 2).

It was sad to gather it alone: a Carosello Manduria and a Carosello Barese kept it company (pic 3).

It's a pity that I picked a Carosello Massafrese Round yesterday: all four would have been well on the same picture (pic 4).

On picture 5 the rest of today's harvest: abundance of Pepper Friggitelli and tomatoes that made up part of  the lunch.

E ADESSO...

...Come le cucino? Ieri pomeriggio ho preso il coraggio a due mani e ho raccolto le prime tre melanzane verdi tonde tailandesi. Beh, forse sto enfatizzando troppo; alla fine le ho fatte sulla piastra. La prossima volta fritte in padella.

Deve avere un discreto livello di acido clorogenico, visto che scurisce appena tagliata. Come si può notare i semi sono numerosi; quindi per fare semi freschi, un frutto basta e avanza.

Tra i pomodori spiccano i black cherry, la cui bontà è stata veramente una sorpresa.

AND NOW...

...How do I cook them? Yesterday afternoon I took my courage in both hands and harvested the first three Thai green round eggplant fruits (pic 1). Well, perhaps I'm playing the matter up; in the end I made them on a griddle. Next time fried in a pan.

It must be high in chlorogenic acid because it gets brown when cut. As you can notice, there are lots of seeds inside, so one fruit is enough to save seeds (pic 2).

On pic 3 yesterday's harvest: besides the aubergines, some tomatoes and sweet friarielli peppers. The black cherry tomatoes outshine all other tomatoes in appearance and deliciousness.

RIPRESA DOPO LA GRANDINE

La grandine del 6 giugno aveva conciato male le melanzane rosse e il Carosello Tondo di Massafra che avevo trapiantato nel verde condominiale (vedi qui). Invece, tranne la Melanzana Rossa di Rotonda che in quell'occasione ha avuto la cima spezzata, si sono riprese bene.

RECOVER AFTER THE HAIL

After the 6th June hail, the red eggplants and the Carosello Tondo di Massafra I had bedded out in the condominial greenery were in a dreadful state (see here). But they recover well, except the Rotonda Red Eggplant because its top broke on that occasion.

A Ribbed Red Eggplant fruit is even growing (pic 5).

The Carosello Tondo di Massafra is flourishing as well, but its fruits are still tiny; so I trimmed all side branches.

IL RACCOLTO DI IERI

Primo vero raccolto della stagione. Il pomodoro Black Cherry è stato una piacevolissima sorpresa. Colore rosso scuro tendente al nero. Molto dolce e gustossimo. Credo che sarà una presenza fissa sui miei balconi.

Ha peso e dimensioni molto ridotti. La maggior parte dei frutti non va oltre i due-quattro grammi, ma qualcuno raggiunge anche i dieci. Molto dolce e saporito contrariamente ad altri pomodorini provenienti da piante nane.

I caroselli cominciano a produrre quasi tutti i giorni. I frutti nella foto 4 sono due Polisello e un cetriolo; l'altro, tondeggiante, è un Carosello di Manduria.

Tondeggiante si fa per dire: sembra una pera di grosse dimensioni, a ulteriore dimostrazione del polimorfismo che caratterizza i caroselli pugliesi.

YESTERDAY'S HARVEST

First real harvest of the season.

The Black Cherry tomato was a very pleasant surprise. It's dark red coloured, almost black. It's sweet and very tasty. I believe it will be a regular presence on my balconies (pic 1).

Tiny Tim tomato is very small; most of fruits weigh two to four grams, but some of them reach ten. Unlike other small tomatoes coming out from dwarf plants, it's very sweet and tasty (pic 2 and 3).

Carosellos are starting yielding almost every day. On pic 4 are two Polisello and a cucumber; the roundish one is a Carosello Manduria. It's easy to say roundish. It looks like a pear of uncommon size; this is a further proof of the carosello polymorphism (pic 5).

On picture 6 the yesterday's total production. The intruder on the right is a Vesuvio tomato.
