EVERYTHING IS GOING WELL

On Pic 1 six out of ten carosello varieties I've been growing this year. It was hard to take a decent photo: the balcony is too narrow.

The Carosello Spuredda Leccese was the first to be bedded out on the 18th of April (pic 2).

I planted out the Carosello Scopatizzo Barese three days later (pic 3), but it's already more developed than the Spuredda Leccese.

Non avevo mai avuto pomodori così ben sviluppati in questo periodo dell'anno. Tutto merito di un'insolita seconda parte di aprile molto calda. L'unico rammarico è l'Indigo Rose: non è mai germogliato.

Here you are my 2018 tomato final list.

I've never had so well-grown tomatoes at this moment of the year. It's all thanks to an unusually very hot second part of April. The only regret is Indigo Rose: it has never sprouted.

Il primo carosello della stagione, messo a dimora ieri con largo anticipo, ha passato indenne la prima notte.

IT MADE IT!

The first carosello of the season, planted out very early yesterday, weathered the first night outdoors (pic 1).

Certainly, the danger of a spring frost is steadily just around the corner, but it was duly sheltered (pics 2 and 3).

È UN AZZARDO?

Forse, ma perché non tentare visto il bel tempo? Ho appena messo a dimora il primo carosello con un anticipo di almeno un paio di settimane. È il Carosello Spuredda Leccese; l'ho già coltivato qualche anno fa. Se non ricordo male, a maturazione è verde scuro. 

Se non sopravvive, c'è la pianta gemella pronta a rimpiazzarla.

IS IT TOO RECKLESS?

Maybe, but why don't have a try seen the nice weather? I've just bedded my first carosello out two weeks early at least. It's the Carosello Spuredda Leccese; I've already cultivated it a few years ago. If I'm not wrong, once ripe, it's dark green.

If it doesn't survive, its twin plant is ready to replace it.

I CAROSELLI FINALMENTE...

I caroselli non ci hanno messo molto a spuntare: quasi tutti in meno di una settimana.

Intanto tutte le piantine di pomodoro stanno superando la fase critica dell'ingiallimento delle foglie, la cosiddetta clorosi. Grazie a dosi minime di solfato di ferro. Quest'anno il pomodoro osservato speciale sarà una varietà dal nome chilometrico: Spagnoletta del Golfo di Gaeta e di Formia, per facilità chiamato Spagnoletta.

Si possono già notare le foglie praticamente identiche a quelle delle patate.

CAROSELLOS AT LAST...

Carosellos haven't taken long to sprout: almost all of them in less than a week. On picture 1 six out of ten varieties I'm going to cultivate this year.

In the meantime, all tomatoes are weathering the critical period of the leaves yellowing, the so-called chlorosis, thanks to small doses of ferric sulphate. This year focus on a variety with a lenghty name: The Gulf of Gaeta and Formia Spagnoletta (pic 2), simply known as Spagnoletta. Gaeta and Formia are two towns situated south of Rome on the Tyrrhenian coast.

The leaves of this variety are nearly identical to potatoes ones (pic 3).

NUOVI ARRIVI

Tra qualche giorno seminerò i caroselli. Speravo di ricevere i semi di qualche varietà rara, ma è andata decisamente male. Continuerò la mia ricerca, ma per quest'anno dovrò accontentarmi delle solite varietà che si trovano nei vivai pugliesi. Comunque, ci saranno almeno cinque varietà di cui non ho mai scritto su questo blog. Il problema è: i semi di questi sacchetti sono puri? L'anno scorso invece del Carosello Tondo di Manduria (foto 5) è venuto fuori il Carosello di Manduria.

NEW ENTRIES

In a few days I'll sow carosellos. I hoped to get some seeds of rare varieties, but it went extremely bad for me. I'll carry on with my search, but for this year I'll have to make the best of the usual varieties you can find in local nurseries in Puglia. Anyway, there'll be at least five strains I've never talked about in this blog. The matter is: are the seeds of these packets pure? Last year the Carosello Manduria came out instead of the Carosello Round Manduria (pic 5).

NONOSTANTE IL FREDDO...

Nonostante un tempo atmosferico piuttosto ostile, la mia insalatina è in pienissima forma e sta producendo a ritmo serrato.

Ignoro il nome di questo lattughino. Ho preso i semi dal padiglione turco durante Expo 2015 a Milano. La targhettina recava la scritta "Turku Roka" o "Roka Turku" che dovrebbe significare "Rucola Turca". Ho arraffato una manciata di semi non molto convinto da quanto scritto sulla targhettina, visto che i semi mi sembravano più di insalatina che non di rucola. Ed infatti è venuto fuori questo lattughino dal retrogusto amarognolo che faccio riprodurre da tre stagioni.

Da allora, con un po' di ironia, in famiglia viene chiamata insalatina turca. Cresce benissimo in vasetti dal diametro di 10 cm. (una pianta per vasetto) ed è molto resistente al freddo. L'ho seminata tra settembre e novembre e ha superato brillantemente l'inverno.

DESPITE THE COLD...

Despite a quite abysmal weather, my salad has a wonderful appereance and it's yielding a lot. I ignore this small lettuce's name. I took seeds of it at the Turkish stand during the Milan 2015 Expo. The small plate read "Turku Roka" or "Roka Turku" that should mean "Turkish Rocket". I grabbed a handful of seeds, though I was unconvinced about the caption on the small plate: the seeds looked more those of a salad than of a rocket. As a matter of fact, this small lettuce came out. Since then it's been called with some irony Turkish salad by my family members. I've been cultivating it for three seasons. It has got a bitterish aftertaste.

It thrives very well in 10 cm diameter pots (one plant per pot) as shown on pic 5 and is a frost-resistant variety. I sowed it between September and November and it overwintered with notable harvests.

PIANO PIANO SI RICOMINCIA...

Per seminare i caroselli, dovrò aspettare almeno 40-45 giorni. È ancora troppo presto.

I pomodori, invece, seminati il 21 gennaio e germinati dopo una decina di giorni, sono già a buon punto. Nella foto sotto, li vedete nel loro lightbox artigianale, fatto da un cartone e due lampade da scrivania e posizionato sopra una mensola vicino ad un termosifone. L'anno scorso è andata bene...

Quest'anno voglio provare altri indeterminati neri dopo l'ottima esperienza con il Black Cherry dello scorso anno. Con il Black Russian, il Nero di Crimea e l'Indigo Rose sarà più dura, suppongo.

STARTING AGAIN IN MY OWN GOOD TIME...

I'll have to wait at least 40-45 days before sowing carosellos. It's still too early.

On the contrary, the tomatoes are already well ahead. I sowed them on the 21st of January and they sprouted after about ten days. As shown in the photo above, you can see them in their simple lightbox, made with a carton and two desk lamps. I placed it on a shelf near a heating radiator. Last year it went well...

It's a list subject to a few changes, but I must try non to cultivate too many plants: last year twenty-five turned out to be really an exaggerated amount for my balconies. This year I want to grow other black indeterminates after last year's good experience with the Black Cherry. I suppose it's going to be harder with the Black Russian, Black Krim and Indigo Rose.

Due anni fa ho coltivato una pianta di Pilusella (allora definita erroneamente Polisello). Su questo blog ne ho parlato di sfuggita senza dedicarle un post. Presto o tardi, l'ha coltiverò di nuovo scrivendo qualcosa di più approfondito, ma non quest'anno. Difatti questa varietà di carosello non incontra i favori di nessun componente della famiglia. Poi un ibrido tra la Pilusella e non so quale altro carosello. So solo che sarà necessario disibridarlo e fargli perdere il sapore incredibilmente amaro. Il sapore amaro è un fattore sconosciuto a tutti i caroselli. L'ho chiamato Carosello Pelosello.

THE APULIAN CAROSELLO - Gallery of pictures (3)

Today the last part of this gallery of photographs.

Two years ago I cultivated a Pilusella vine (1 and 2); on that occasion I wrongly named it Polisello. I talked about it briefly on this blog without dedicating a post to it. Sooner or later, I'll grow it again writing something more exhaustive, but not this year. As a matter of fact, this carosello variety is out of favour of all family members. It can wait...

Carosello Pelosello (3 and 4) is a hybrid between Pilusella and an unknown carosello. It will be necessary to dehybridize it so that it can lose its incredibly bitter taste. Bitterness is an unknown factor to all carosello varieties.

Tortarello Barese (5 to 7) is another variety which my family and I aren't fond of.

MELANZANA VERDE TONDA THAI

Come nel caso della Solanum Aethiopicum - Kumba Group, anche questa piccola melanzana proveniente dalla Tailandia, ma conosciutissima in tutto il Sudest asiatico, non mi ha entusiasmato. Il problema è sempre lo stesso: come la si può cucinare? C'è qualche esperto di cucina asiatica là fuori? Io mi sono limitato a grigliarla che, credo, non sia il massimo in questo caso.

Il frutto è grande quanto una pallina da golf. È di colore verde con striature di verde leggermente più scuro.

Se si vogliono fare semi freschi, la melanzana deve diventare gialla.

Anche se piccolo, all'interno i semi sono tantissimi. Chi ne vuole un po', si faccia avanti!

Una volta raccolto e tagliato, si scurisce subito, segno che è ricco di acido clorogenico.

La pianta in sé è molto piccola. Diventa poco più alta che nelle foto qui sotto.

Fa dei bellissimi fiori bianco candido. Diversamente dalle altre varietà di melanzane, i petali non sono separati, ma fusi tra di loro.

THAI ROUND GREEN EGGPLANT

This small eggplant is native to Thailand, but it's well-known in the whole Southeast Asia. As in the case of the Solanum Aethiopicum - Kumba Group, this eggplant variety hasn't enthralled me. The matter is always the same: how can I cook it? Is there an expert on Asian cuisine among you? I restricted myself to grilling it, but I don't think this is the best way to make the most of it.

The fruit is as big as a golf ball. Its colour is green with slightly darker green stripes. It looks like an unripe tomato (1 and 2).

If you wish to save seeds, it must get yellow (3). Though small, there's a big batch of seeds inside (4). Who wants some, come forward!

Once harvested and cut, it goes dark soon; it means it's rich in chlorogenic acid (5).

The plant is very small. It gets just a little bit higher than in (6) and (7).

Its pure white flowers are gorgeous (8). Differently from other eggplant varieties, its petals aren't separated, but fused each other.

Il Carosello Bianco Leccese ricorda molto il Carosello di Manduria sia nel colore che nel polimorfismo, ossia le diverse forme che assumono i frutti anche sulla stessa pianta.

Altri caroselli che incontrano i gusti di tutta la famiglia sono il Carosello Tondo Massafrese e il Carosello Tondo di Massafra. Sono quasi identici.

Un carosello di cui ignoravo l'esistenza è il Carosello Barese. Secondo me, è un ibrido che una ditta sementiera si è trovato tra le mani per caso e non ha perso tempo nel commercializzarlo. Tuttavia, è una varietà deliziosa nel gusto e originale nell'aspetto esteriore.

THE APULIAN CAROSELLO - Gallery of pictures (2)

The Carosello Bianco (White) Leccese  (1 to 3) looks like the Carosello Manduria both in the colour and in polymorphism, that is the different shapes fruits take even on the same vine.

The Carosello Round Massafrese and Carosello Round Massafra (4 to 7) are very popular in my family as well. They are almost identical (8).

I ignored the existence of the Carosello Barese (9 and 10). In my opinion, it's a hybrid a seed company met by chance and wasted no time in merchandising it. Anyway, it's a delicious variety in taste and original in its outside appearance.
