MARCIUME APICALE SUL BLACK RUSSIAN

Sapevo che sarebbe potuto succedere, ma ho voluto lo stesso provare a coltivare in vaso il pomodoro Black Russian. I primi due frutti sono stati colpiti da marciume apicale.

Adesso spero nel Nero di Crimea: alcuni frutti hanno allegato da poco.

BLOSSOM END ROT ON MY BLACK RUSSIAN

I knew it might happen, but I wanted to try and grow the Black Russian tomato in a pot all the same. The first two fruits have been affected by blossom end rot. I hope the same won't occur to the Black Krim: some of its tomatoes have just set.

QUASI PRONTI I PRIMI CAROSELLI

Ecco i primi caroselli che mangerò. Sono ancora piccoli, ma in pochi giorni giungeranno a maturazione.

C'è spazio anche per le cattive notizie. Ieri pomeriggio ho dovuto estirpare il Carosello Mezzo Lungo Barese perché stava marcendo.

THE FIRST CAROSELLI ARE ALMOST READY

A Manduria Round (pic 1) and a Massafra Round will be the first caroselli I'll eat. They are still small, but they'll ripen in a few days.

Unfortunately, there's a bad news as well: yesterday afternoon I had to root out the Carosello Half Long Barese because it was rotting (pic 3).

CAROSELLI - ancora un aggiornamento

Dopo tre settimane un aggiornamento sui caroselli che ho sui balconi: le piante stanno crescendo bene, tranne il Mezzo Lungo Barese. Per i frutti è ancora presto: maggio non è stato tanto soleggiato come la seconda parte di aprile. I primi stanno allegando in questo periodo. Probabilmente mangerò il primo carosello tra un paio di settimane. Comunque...

CAROSELLI - A new update

After three weeks an update about the caroselli I'm growing on my balconies: the vines are thriving well, except for the Half Long Barese. As concerns fruits, it's still early: May wasn't so hot as the second part of April. The first ones have been setting in this period. Probably I'll harvest the first carosello in a couple of weeks.

The Carosello Half Long Barese has been the only sore point so far (pic 6). I had got suspicious on account of its slower growth than the other vines. Looking at the lower part of the stem, I noticed it was getting brown (pic 7). Probably it's rotting and this rottenness is going up the stem. It's the first time this occurs to me in so many years. I'm pretty sure I'll have to root it out.

Tutto procede bene anche per quel che concerne i pomodori. Quest'anno sto provando per la prima volta il Black Russian e il Nero di Crimea.

Le piante sono bellissime e non ci sono tracce di malattie o insetti malefici. Non ancora, almeno. Ci sono tanti fiori, ma non ha ancora allegato alcun frutto. È un po' un azzardo coltivare queste due varietà perché non amano il caldo eccessivo e il sole diretto che non mancano sui miei balconi.

L'anno scorso ho coltivato il Black Cherry ed è stato un successo. Ho voluto riprovare quest'anno con due piante. Anche questa varietà preferisce l'ombra in estate.

Le cinque piante di Spagnoletta del Golfo di Gaeta e di Formia stanno producendo già moltissimo. Certo,  i frutti sono ancora piccoli...

La pianta è a crescita determinata e neppure lei ama l'esposizione diretta al sole in estate. Non supera il metro di altezza.

A LOOK AT MY TOMATOES

As regards my tomatoes, they are doing very well. This year for the first time I've been trying Black Russian and Black Krim (1 and 2). The two plants are beautiful and there's no trace of diseases or pests. Not yet, at least. There are so many flowers, but no fruits have set yet. It's a little hazardous to grow these two varieties because my balconies are very hot in summer. As a matter of fact, both Black Russian and  Black Krim don't love the baking hot and direct sun.

Last year I cultivated Black Cherry (3) successfully. I've wanted to try again this year with two plants. In summer this variety likes a shady place as well. The first berries are starting to set (4).

The five plants of Spagnoletta are already yielding a lot (5 and 6). Certainly, their fruits are still small... It's a determinate growth tomato (7) that doesn't love the direct exposure to the summer sun as well. It doesn't reach one metre.

NON SOLO BALCONI 2

Piena terra anche per le mie melanzane rosse: solo due delle quattro previste. Me ne sono avanzate due, belle come quelle in queste foto. Non so dove metterle...

Finora l'unica differenza che ho trovato tra la Rossa di Mormanno, una Solanum Gilo, e quella di Rotonda, una Aethiopicum, è che la prima presenta delle foglie di un verde più scuro rispetto alla seconda. Ma può non voler dire niente.

NOT ONLY BALCONIES - 2nd part

Open ground for my red eggplants as well: only two out of the predicted four. Two have been left over, as beautiful as the ones shown in the photos. I don't know where to keep them...

So far the only difference I have found out between the Mormmano Red, a Solanum Gilo, and the one of Rotonda, an Aethiopicum, is that the former displays darker green than the latter. But this may mean nothing.

NON SOLO BALCONI

Quest'anno ho la pessimistica sensazione che le poche piante che di solito metto a dimora nel verde condominiale avranno vita breve. A poche ore dal trapianto ho trovato le due piante di carosello danneggiate. Qualche animale o un "vicino simpaticone"?

I have the pessimistic feeling that the few plants I usually bedded out in the condominial greenery will have a short life. I found out they had been damaged just a couple of hours since the transplanting. Who's the culprit? An animal or a "fine fellow neighbour"?

CAROSELLI - update

Just a photographic update about the carosello varieties I've been cultivating this year. I would say everything is going very well, except some slight burns on few leaves.

I've been growing eight out of ten varieties on my balconies (pics 1 to 8); two will be bedded out in the condominial greenery shortly (pics 9 and 10).

MELANZANE 2018

Anche quest'anno melanzane rosse. Sono le solite: la calabrese Melanzana Rossa di Mormanno e la lucana Melanzana Rossa di Rotonda. Mi è mancata la voglia di provare qualcosa di nuovo.
C'è di nuovo che non le ho mai coltivate insieme. Non le coltiverò sui balconi perché troppo esposti al sole diretto che le melanzane rosse soffrono. Perciò dovrò trovare posti semi-ombreggiati nello spazio condominiale.
Il nemico principale delle melanzane rosse è il temibile ragnetto rosso. Sono necessarie continue nebulizzazioni, ma anche così alla lunga è una battaglia persa. Quest'anno ho pensato di nebulizzare fin da subito. Magari questa volta riesco a limitare i danni.

La Melanzana Rossa di Rotonda è una Solanum aethiopicum, mentre la Melanzana Rossa di Mormanno è una Solanum gilo. A osservarle da vicino non c'è differenza.

THE 2018 EGGPLANTS

This year the usual red eggplants again: the Mormanno Red Eggplant and the Rotonda Red Eggplant. I haven't been in the mood to try something new. It's a novelty for me to cultivate them together.

I won't grow them on my balconies because they would get too much sun and heat they suffer a lot. This is why I have to find half-shady places in the condominial greenery.

The vicious red spider is the enemy number one of red eggplants. Ceaseless nebulations are necessary, but also doing so it's a hopeless task in the long run. This year I've been nebulizing since the beginning of the season. Perhaps this time I'll be able to contain damage.

The Rotonda Red Eggplant is a Solanum aethiopicum whereas the Mormanno Red Eggplant is a Solanum gilo. If you have a close look, there's no difference between them (pic 2).

Il mio caroselleto quasi al completo. È stato arduo fare una foto appena decente: il balcone è troppo stretto.

EVERYTHING IS GOING WELL

On Pic 1 six out of ten carosello varieties I've been growing this year. It was hard to take a decent photo: the balcony is too narrow.

The Carosello Spuredda Leccese was the first to be bedded out on the 18th of April (pic 2).

I planted out the Carosello Scopatizzo Barese three days later (pic 3), but it's already more developed than the Spuredda Leccese.

Non avevo mai avuto pomodori così ben sviluppati in questo periodo dell'anno. Tutto merito di un'insolita seconda parte di aprile molto calda. L'unico rammarico è l'Indigo Rose: non è mai germogliato.

Here you are my 2018 tomato final list.

I've never had so well-grown tomatoes at this moment of the year. It's all thanks to an unusually very hot second part of April. The only regret is Indigo Rose: it has never sprouted.

Il primo carosello della stagione, messo a dimora ieri con largo anticipo, ha passato indenne la prima notte.

IT MADE IT!

The first carosello of the season, planted out very early yesterday, weathered the first night outdoors (pic 1).

Certainly, the danger of a spring frost is steadily just around the corner, but it was duly sheltered (pics 2 and 3).
