TOMATO - report of the 28th of March

After last year's disaster, my tomatoes want to amaze me this year. I sowed them very early and aided by many days of nice weather, I had to repot some vines again: sown in cell-trays; afterwards repotted in 10 cm pots; then in those ones of 26 cm. In a month or so, I'll put them in their final containers.

It's the first time I grow the Blueberry Tomato. You can already make out one of  its features: its leaves get gradually very dark, between black and bluish.

Thanks to Angelo Passalacqua, I got two rare varieties seeds from Salento, the San Donato Cucummaru and the Galatina Round Meloncella, practically unknown outside their place of origin. Both words, "Cucummaru" and "Meloncella", are among the many local terms to indicate "Caroselli".

(1) Carosello Barese
(2) Carosello Barese

I frutti crescono molto vicino allo stelo principale:
(3) Carosello Barese dalla forma ovale
(4) Carosello Barese

(7) Carosello Barese - sezione longitudinale

(8) Carosello Barese

THE CAROSELLO BARESE

The CAROSELLO BARESE looks like the Carosello Bianco Leccese. The former is a little bit rounder, verging on oval, whereas the latter's fruits assume the most different shapes. Anyway, everything you can say about caroselli is always partial: you carry out a careful analysis about a variety, but you may be proved wrong the following year.

The Carosello Barese fruits grow tied to the main stem (pics 1, 2, 3 and 4), but some of them thrive on the side branches as well (5 and 6).

Its flesh is tender and juicy with the placenta and seeds giving a more delicious taste as in the case of other caroselli strains (7). Fruits have to be harvested when they have the shape of a big peach (8).

(2) Spuredda Leccese Scura
(3) Spuredda Leccese Scura
(4) Spuredda Leccese Scura
(5) Spuredda Leccese Scura

(6) Spuredda Leccese Scura

(7) Spuredda Leccese Scura - sezione longitudinale

DARK SPUREDDA LECCESE

Another carosello I cultivated last summer was the DARK SPUREDDA LECCESE. One of its features is a thick fuzz (pic 1).

Its colour is dark green with irregular green spots. As a lot of other varieties, it has a very marked polymorphism. Anyway, its regular shape is cylindrical like the fruit on picture 1 or the one on the left on picture 2.

As in the case of the Carosello Tondo Barese, the Dark Spuredda Leccese fruits grow very close to the main stem (pics 2 to 6). Its flesh is half way between tender and crisp.

Paradossale, no?

(2) Scanalature longitudinali moderatamente profonde

All'interno la polpa è molto chiara, quasi bianca, e succosa:
(4) Polpa chiara e succosa

(5) Frutti molto vicini allo stelo principale
(7) Come nelle foto 5 e 6.

CAROSELLO TONDO BARESE
- cultivated in 2019 -

The CAROSELLO TONDO BARESE is a variety that seed companies consider no longer worthwhile to market. Honestly, this is inexplicable. I ran out of  seeds of this variety. Luckily, one of the top experts in caroselli cultivation, my American friend, Jay Tracy, sent me a good stock. Yes, you've understood well: an American gardener who is a profound expert of a vegetable grown mainly in Puglia, South Italy. It's paradoxic considering that most people living in Puglia know one or two varieties out of more than thirty.

Differently from other strains, the Carosello Tondo Barese doesn't show a pronounced polymorphism: its fruits are almost always round ("tondo" in Italian); just a few times slightly oval or flat to its ends.

It has a very light green skin and longitudinal furrows which aren't very deep in most cases.

Fruits grow very close to the main stem and have to be harvested when they have the same size as a big peach, let's say between 250 and 300 grams. The flesh inside is  very juicy and almost completely white.

CAROSELLO BIANCO LECCESE 2019

(9) 25 agosto - nuovo ramo laterale 1
(10) Nuovo ramo laterale 2
(11) Nuovo ramo laterale 3

(21) Polimorfismo accentuato

Frutti raccolti: 16 (da una singola pianta)
Peso complessivo: 3,826 kg
Peso medio per frutto: 239,13 grammi

CAROSELLO LECCESE WHITE

I have been away from my blog for a while. This doesn't mean caroselli disappointed my expectations. In fact, It's quite the opposite. An exemple was the Carosello Leccese White, one of those varieties which seldom disappoints. It had an astonishing performance because it yielded sixteen fruits split into two different periods: eight from the 20th of July to the 10 th of August (1 to 8).

After the first period, the powdery mildew started to ruin gradually the leaves and the vine seemed to have reached the end of its tether. Instead, after two weeks, new side branches thrived on the vine (9 to 11). These side branches yielded further eight fruits from the 29th of August to the 20th of September (12 to 20).

At the end of the second period the vine was exhausted; the last four caroselli were smaller, but still tastier. The last two harvested show how different caroselli can be on the same vine (21).

Fruits harvested: 16 (from a single vine)
Total weight: 3,826 kg
Average weight per fruit: 239,13 grams

CAROSELLI - aggiornamento

(2) Carosello Cianciuffo
(3) Carosello Cianciuffo - peso: 640 grammi
(4) Carosello Cianciuffo: 2° frutto

CAROSELLI - update

Splitting the caroselli sowing period into three different stages was a good idea. On picture 1 are shown one Manduria, one Cianciuffo, one White Leccese, two Round Baresi and the usual unknown cross. These caroselli were harvested from vines belonging to all three sowing periods.

As a clear proof  of caroselli's polymorphism also on the same vine, the Cianciuffo, also known as Carosello Round Fasano, doesn't want to be outdone by other caroselli varieties. It is neither round nor smooth (2 and 3). On the same vine another small melon is thriving: it seems to be more faithful to its name (4).
