Sono ormai alcuni anni che coltivo ortaggi sul balcone. A dire il vero, non mi dispiacerebbe coltivarli in piena terra. Il problema è che non ho il classico pezzo di orto, così ho deciso di sfruttare il discreto spazio che mi offrono i miei due balconi. Uno è esposto ad est, l'altro a ovest. Certo, l'ideale sarebbe un'esposizione a sud-ovest, ma non stiamo troppo a sottilizzare.
Come si evince dall'indirizzo del mio blog, la coltura principale sarà il carosello pugliese, un ortaggio appartenente alle cucurbitacee. Il suo sapore è a metà tra un cetriolo e un melone immaturo. È caratterizzato dalla presenza di molte varietà, i nomi dei quali sono quelli del loro luogo di origine. Ogni anno tratterò tre o quattro di queste varietà.
Essendo ancora troppo presto per i raccolti 2016, i primi post di questo blog parleranno delle due varietà che ho coltivato l'anno scorso, il Carosello di Manduria e il Carosello Tondo Massafrese, della tecnica agronomica e degli accorgimenti utilizzati per la loro coltivazione in verticale in vaso. In seguito, durante tutta l'estate, racconterò la crescita progressiva delle quattro varietà che coltiverò nel 2016. A partire dalla fine dell'estate, farò una sorta di riassunto con un post per ogni prodotto: non solo caroselli, ma anche pomodori nani e a crescita determinata, peperoni, peperoncini, melanzane, quelle rosse, e una pianta di cetriolo, anch'esso pugliese.

CAROSELLO PUGLIESE - PREVIEW
I've been growing vegetables on my balconies for a few years now. To tell the truth, I wouldn't mind to cultivate them in the open field. The problem is that I don't own the classical plot, so I've decided to take advantage of the fair space on my two balconies. The former is east-facing, the latter has a western exposure. Definitely, the ideal thing would be a south-western exposure, but there's no call for splitting hairs.
As it can be inferred from my blog address, the main crop will be the Carosello Pugliese, a vegetable belonging to the Cucurbitaceae. Its taste is half way between a cucumber and an unripe melon. It includes lots of varieties whose names are those of the places where they were cultivated first. Every year I'll speak about three or four varieties of it.
As it's too early for the 2016 production, I'll start this blog talking about the two strains I grew last year, the Carosello Manduria and the Carosello Round Massafrese, the agronomic method and the devices used for their growth in vertical in pots. Subsequently, during summer I'll tell you about the gradual growth of the four varieties I'll cultivate in 2016. Starting from the end of summer, I'll make a summary with a post for every product: not only carosellos, but also dwarf and determinate growth tomatoes, bell peppers, hot peppers, red aubergines and a strain of cucumber from Puglia, South Italy, the same origin as carosellos.
