A volte i caroselli si dilettano a mostrare composizioni quasi artistiche...

Meanwhile, I have just put in the second sowing caroselli: Cianciuffo, Manduria and White Leccese.

CAROSELLI - un mini raccolto

Quest'anno mi devo accontentare di piccoli raccolti. Finora ho avuto poco spazio a disposizione sui balconi per dei lavori di ristrutturazione e ho dovuto dividere la stagione orticola in tre semine, scaglionate nel tempo.

Il Carosello Barese è ovale e perfettamente liscio mentre il Carosello Tondo Barese è effettivamente tondo, leggermente schiacciato ai poli. Inoltre, l'epicarpo, pardon la buccia, è ruvida al tatto e un po' pelosa.

 CAROSELLI - a tiny harvest

This year I must be content with small harvests. So far I have had little room available on my balconies for some renovation works and I have had to split the gardening activity into three sowings, staggered over three different periods.

The Carosello Barese (1) is oval and completely smooth whereas the Carosello Barese Round (2) is indeed round, but with its two poles slightly flat. Besides, its rind is coarse to the touch and a little fuzzy.

CAROSELLI E POMODORI - aggiornamento

L'attività dell'ortolano è spesso costellata da fallimenti. Purtroppo, ieri ho dovuto eliminare tutte le piante di pomodoro di prima semina. Sono state colpite da qualche fungo che faceva avvizzire le foglie a partire dal basso. Mi è dispiaciuto soprattutto per il pomodoro Oaxacan. Fortunatamente, i pomodori di seconda semina sono già pronti:

Sul fronte caroselli, tre delle cinque piante di prima semina sembrano godere di ottima salute:

Invece il Carosello Tondo Barese e la Varietà Ovale Sconosciuta hanno qualche problema fungino anche loro. Temo che anche la loro sorte sia segnata. Ma anche in questo caso, sono pronti i caroselli di seconda semina:

E la terza è già pronta...

CAROSELLI AND TOMATOES - update

The gardening activity is often studded with failures. Unfortunately, yesterday I had to pull out all tomatoes plants in their first sowing. They were affected by some kind of blight that made leaves shrivel from the bottom. I was mainly sorry for Oaxacan tomato. Luckily, the second sowing tomatoes are already ready (1).

On caroselli's side, three out of five vines seem to enjoy good health: Carosello Barese, Spuredda Leccese Dark and Carosello Massafra Round (2 to 4). On the contrary, the Carosello Barese Round and Unknown Oval Variety have some fungal problems as well. I'm afraid that also their fate is sealed. But in this case too, the second sowing caroselli are ready: Cianciuffo, Carosello Manduria and Carosello Leccese White (5). And the third one is already on the way...

POMODORI - aggiornamento

(1) Pomodoro Precolombiano dei Sioux o Oaxacan

Uno degli osservati speciali di quest'anno. Per adesso è in un vaso di 26 cm di diametro, ma a breve sarà travasato in uno molto più grande perché è una varietà indeterminata con pomodori di discreta pezzatura. Il primo frutto è ancora minuscolo:

Di questa varietà ha già parlato il mio amico Angelo Passalacqua in amicidellorto2.

TOMATOES - update

This year one of the special observed ones is the Oaxacan tomato (1). Now it's in a 26 cm diameter pot, but shortly it will be repotted in a much larger one because it's an indeterminate variety with fairly big-sized tomatoes. The first fruit is still tiny (2).

My friend Angelo Passalacqua talked about this strain in amicidellorto2.

Solo quattro giorni fa questi due caroselli erano minuscoli (vedi qui). Tra un paio di giorni uno dei due sarà pronto da mangiare; l'altro, il giorno dopo. Intanto, altre due varietà cominciano a darsi da fare...

Just four days ago the two caroselli on picture 1 were tiny (see here). In a couple of days one of the two will be ready to eat; the other one, the following day. In the meantime, two more varieties are starting to make themselves work (pics 2 and 3).

Ancora un piccolo aggiornamento sui miei caroselli.

(1) Frutto minuscolo di Spuredda Leccese Scura

Anche se ancora molto piccolo, credo che andrà a maturazione. Si intravede un altro piccolo carosello sotto, ma ho paura che stia ingiallendo, cosa comunque normale. La maggior parte dei caroselli muore nella primissima fase di crescita. La peluria che si nota scomparirà quasi completamente a maturazione.

Another little update about my caroselli. Even if it is still very small, I think the fruit in the photo is going to get to a complete ripening. You can also catch a sight of another tiny fruit underneath, but I am afraid it is turning yellow, which is normal anyway. Most of caroselli die when they are at their very first stage of growth. The fuzz you can see will disappear almost completely when the carosello is ripe.

È un Carosello Barese. È grande appena quanto il pollice di una mano, ma credo che andrà a maturazione completa. A inizio produzione, molti frutti di carosello ingialliscono e cadono dalla pianta quando sono ancora minuscoli.

The first carosello at last... It is a Carosello Barese. It is just as big a thumb of a hand, but I think it will get to a complete ripening. At a first stage of production, a lot of carosello fruits turn yellow and fall out of the vine when they are still tiny.

A first update about the first sowing caroselli. I would say it is going well so far, in spite of the inconveniences caused by the renovation works on my balconies.

All vines look alike, but fruits will give them the lie...
