MELANZANE ROSSE IN FRIULI - aggiornamento

Vi ho già parlato delle melanzane rosse di Maurizio Ceccotti, un ortolano che vive a Visco, in provincia di Udine. Ora un doveroso aggiornamento fotografico:

Dalla grandezza dei frutti direi che il loro pesa varia da 50 a oltre 100 grammi l'uno:

RED EGGPLANTS IN FRIULI - update

I've already talked about Maurizio Ceccotti's red eggplants, a gardener living in Visco, a small village in Friuli, Northeast Italy. He sent me more photos about its production. I would say a bountiful harvest. One of his plants bears the weight of twenty-four eggplants!

MELANZANE ROSSE 2018 - aggiornamento

Un aggiornamento sulle mie melanzane rosse. Sicuramente stanno meglio quelle che sto coltivando nel verde condominiale, soprattutto la Rossa di Rotonda:

Dopo un inizio stentato, la pianta si è ripresa e ha cominciato a dare bei frutti:

Ne ho raccolto uno e lasciato l'altro per fare i semi per l'anno prossimo:

Altre melanzane sono in via di maturazione.

A pochi metri dalla Rossa di Rotonda, c'è quella di Mormanno. Contrariamente alla prima, il portamento della pianta ha avuto un bel inizio, ma ora molte foglie sono giallognole:

È un po' più lenta nella produzione:

Sul balcone tutte e due devono fare i conti con il terribile ragnetto rosso. Il loro portamento, rispetto alle due piante coltivate in piena terra, è un po' diverso: più alte, ma meno folte.

Le melanzane crescono più lentamente. Al momento sono grandi quanto acini di uva.

RED EGGPLANTS 2018 - update

Just an update about my red eggplants. The ones I'm growing in the condominial greeney are doing better, mainly the Rotonda Red (1). After a difficult start, it has recovered and begun to yield nice fruits (2 to 4).

Just a few metres far from the Rotonda Red, I'm cultivating the Mormanno Red Eggplant (5). Differently from the former, after an initial bright growth period, a lot of the Mormanno Red's leaves are now yellowish. It's slower in production as well (6 and 7).

On the balcony both have to struggle against the terrible red spider. Compared to the plants cultivated in the ground, their growth is a bit different: taller, but less bushy (8 and 10). The fruits are growing slowier: they are still as big as grapes (9 and 11).

UN PEPERONE PARTICOLARE

Il peperone in questione è il Peperone di Senise. Ieri ho raccolto il primo esemplare. Ha un aspetto minaccioso, tipo quei terribili peperoncini piccanti che a mangiarli serve un palato foderato di amianto.

Invece, pare che sia dolcissimo. Dico "pare" perché non l'ho mai coltivato prima e questo prima bacca l'ho subito 'nzertata.

Per un pugliese o un lucano, la parola 'nzerto, che qualcuno ha italianizzato orribilmente in serta, non ha bisogno di alcuna spiegazione. È una collana fatta con lo spago dove i frutti appena raccolti vengono appesi a essiccare. In questo caso non al sole diretto. Io ho appeso questo primo peperone sul muro del balcone, ma dietro la tenda da sole. Infatti, il modo migliore per consumarlo è essicato. Per adesso è uno 'nzerto misero, ma presto avrà dei compagni.

Comunque, confermo che la pianta di Peperone di Senise cresce benissimo sul balcone. Le mie due piante sono una in vaso da 35 cm di diametro e l'altra in vaso da 30 cm.

Indubbiamente, il Peperone di Senise merita aggiornamenti costanti.

AN UNUSUAL PEPPER

The pepper at issue is the Senise Sweet Pepper (1). Two days ago I harvested the first specimen. Its apperance is baleful, like that of those terrible hot peppers impossible to eat, unless you have your mouth lined with amianthus.

Instead it seems that it's very sweet. I say "it seems" because I have never cultivated it before and hung this first fruit to dry on the wall of one of my balconies. As a matter of fact, the best way to eat this kind of pepper is after drying. Dessication must not be made in the direct sun; this is why I hung it behind a sunshade. 

At the moment the necklace I made with a piece of string has only one pepper (2 and 3), but in a few days I'll surely add others.

Anyway, I can say that the Senise Sweet Pepper plant (4 and 5) thrives very well on a balcony. My two plants are one in a 35 cm diameter pot and the other in a 30 cm one.

There's no doubt that the Senise Sweet Pepper deserves constant updates.

ECCOLO QUA!

Stamattina ho raccolto il primo Carosello Scopatizzo Barese, in grave ritardo rispetto agli altri. È forse la varietà di carosello più piccola, anche più del Mezzo Lungo di Polignano. I due hanno una consistenza croccante simile, anche se lo Scopatizzo Barese è leggermente meno secco. Comunque, queste due varietà non sono tra le mie preferite.

HERE IT IS!

This morning I harvested the first fruit of Carosello Scopatizzo Barese, much later than the others. It's perhaps the smallest carosello strain, even more than the Half Long Polignano. Both of them have a similar crunchy texture, even if the Scopatizzo Barese is slightly less dry. Anyway, these two varieties aren't qmong my favourites.

Battute parte, domani raccoglierò il primo Carosello Scopatizzo Barese:

Non ho mai avuto fortuna con questa varietà. La prima volta è stata pesantemente attaccata e distrutta dall'oidio, o mal bianco, nel giro di pochi giorni; la seconda volta ha prodotto la miseria di quattro frutti; quest'anno si è messa a produrre quando le altre varietà hanno praticamente finito. Chissà se questo sarà l'unico frutto...

Joking apart, tomorrow I'll harvest the first fruit of Carosello Scopatizzo Barese.

I've never had lack with this strain. The first time was badly affected by powdery mildew and destroyed in a few days' time; the second time it yielded just four fruits; this year it has started producing whereas the other varieties have virtually come to an end. 

Who knows whether it will be the only fruit...

UN POMODORO NUOVO

Grazie a un amico, due anni fa ho provato a coltivare il Pomodoro Roma Nano di Artena, una varietà da lui selezionata. L'esperienza è stata fallimentare, perciò anche quest'anno non avevo molte speranze. E invece...

A dire il vero, questa pianta tanto nana non lo è di sicuro. Ho dovuto cimarla altrimenti sarebbe diventata ancora più alta. È adatta a essere coltivata sul balcone perché cresce stretta lateralmente. Nemmeno i suoi frutti sono tanto piccoli:

Probabilmente questa varietà non si è ancora stabilizzata.

A NEW TOMATO

Thanks to a friend, two years ago I had a go at cultivating the Artena Dwarf Roma Tomato, a variety he selected previously. That experience was a disaster, so this year I was again prepared for a failure. But things are going well so far...

To be true, this tomato plant isn't surely dwarf. I had to pinch the growing-tip out otherwise it would get higher. It's suited for growing on a balcony because it thrives narrow on its sides. Not even its fruits are small.

Probably the selection of this variety isn't completed yet. 

L'ORTO SECONDARIO

Quest'anno sto trascurando alquanto l'orto condominiale. A dire il vero, non ho voluto mettere di mia volontà molte piante perché quando si vive in un condominio c'è sempre chi non gradisce vedere piante da orto negli spazi comuni. Comunque, ieri ho raccolto un Barattiere e un Carosello Melone Tarantino.

Le piante di melanzane rosse sono più belle sul balcone, ma per adesso nessun frutto ha ancora allegato mentre la Melanzana Rossa di Rotonda dell'orto secondario mette in bella mostra due bei frutti.

THE SECONDARY GARDEN

This year I'm neglecting the condominial garden. Actually, I didn't want to bed a lot of plants out voluntarily because when you live in blocks of flats there's always some tenants who don't like to see people doing gardening in common areas. Anyway, yesterday I harvested a Barattiere (1) and a Carosello Melone Tarantino (2).

The plants of red eggplants are more attractive on my balconies, but by now no fruits have set yet whereas the Rotonda Red Eggplant in the secondary garden shows off two nice fruits.

CAROSELLI CALIFORNIANI

No, non è una variante americana dei caroselli pugliesi. La spiegazione è semplice: un mio amico americano, John "Jay" Tracy coltiva caroselli nella California Settentrionale, dopo averli coltivati anche a Tucson in Arizona. La mia amicizia con Jay risale al 2011 o al 2012 attraverso il blog amicidellorto di Angelo Passalacqua. Da allora ci scambiamo semi di caroselli e pomodori. A lui devo un gioiello come l'Hahms Gelbe Topftomate. Recentemente abbiamo dato seguito alla nostra amicizia parlandoci attraverso Skype.

Francamente non ho mai visto caroselli belli come i suoi. Giudicate voi.

In passato anch'io ho coltivato questa varietà di carosello, ma non so come, sono rimasto senza semi; confidavo troppo nel fatto che li avrei sempre nei vivai di Taranto dove passo le ferie tutti gli anni. Ma ormai sono tre o quattro anni che non li trovo più. Meno male che Jay è anche un ottimo seed saver e non mancherà di spedire al suo amico italiano qualche seme di questa varietà.

Nel suo blog pubblica spesso post sui caroselli: Carosello Bianco Leccese, il Carosello Tondo di Massafra, il Carosello Tondo Massafrese e il Carosello Polisello e altri. Chi mastica un po' di inglese, potrà imparare molto sui caroselli.

CAROSELLI FROM CALIFORNIA

No, it isn't a kind of American carosello. The matter is simple: an American friend of mine John "Jay" Tracy grows caroselli in Northern California, after cultivating them in Tucson, Arizona, as well. My friendship with Jay goes back to 2011 or 2012 through Angelo Passalacqua's blog, amicidellorto. Since then we have been exchanging seeds of caroselli and tomatoes. Thanks to him, I grow a jewel like the Hahms Gelbe Topftomate. We have recently met on Skype.
I have never seen caroselli as beautiful as his. Just judge yourselves from the pictures: the carosello variety shown is the Tondo Barese.

In the past I cultivated this carosello strain as well, but I don't know how, I've been out of seeds; I counted too much that I would always find them in my summer holiday place. But I haven't found them any more for three or four years now. Thank goodness Jay is also an excellent seed saver (pic 5) and he'll send without fail to his Italian friend a few seeds of this variety.

At his blog he often publishes posts about caroselli: Carosello Leccese White, Carosello Massafra Round, Carosello Tondo Massafrese, Carosello Polisello and others. If you speak a smattering English, you can learn a lot from him about caroselli.

CAROSELLI - raccolto (3)

Devo ammettere che quest'anno sono un po' deluso dai miei caroselli: su otto piante che ho sui balconi, ho dovuto eliminarne una; tre sono in grave ritardo; una ha appena cominciato a produrre; tre stanno facendo il loro dovere.
Comunque, ieri mattina ho fatto un discreto raccolto.

CAROSELLI - harvest (3)

I must admit that this year I'm a bit disappointed by my caroselli: out of the eight vines I'm cultivating on my balconies I had to root out one of them; three are quite late; one has just started yielding; three are doing their duty.

Anyway, yesterday I harvested a reasonable crop (1): a Half Long Polignano (2), a Manduria (3), a Spuredda Leccese Fasciata (4), a Massafra Round (5), a Manduria Round (6).

I haven't taken a picture of the two caroselli Manduria together yet (7). There's still one missing I hope to have next year.

RED EGGPLANTS IN FRIULI

Last winter Maurizio, a friend living in Friuli, Northeast Italy, asked me for some seeds of Rotonda Red Eggplant and Mormanno Red Eggplant. Yesterday he sent me some photos.

I would say that he's doing a magnificent work. The two reds native to the Pollino massif in South Italy have clearly found another ideal climate in Friuli, besides Maurizio's ability. He lives in a small village located at 25 metres on the sea-level. I'll ask him to keep me updated about his reds and save some seeds. You never know...
