POMODORO DATTERINO SICCAGNO

È una varietà a crescita determinata. L'aggettivo "siccagno" lascia intendere che in piena terra viene coltivato con poca acqua, il che non è possibile se lo fate in un vaso.

L'ho coltivato in un vaso da 26 cm; temevo che non sarebbe stato sufficiente per una crescita accettabile della pianta. Invece, mi sbagliavo.

Data la polpa molto spessa, è adattissimo per fare il sugo, ma anche in insalata è degno dei palati più sopraffini.

Tuttavia, questa varietà è caratterizzata da un discreto polimorfismo dei frutti. Notate il pomodoro in primo piano nella foto 4. Presenta una solcatura centrale, non insolita in alcuni frutti.

DATTERINO SICCAGNO TOMATO

It's a determinate growth variety. The adjective "siccagno" means something like "dry"; it gives to understand that in the ground it's cultivated with little water, which isn't possible if you do it in a pot.

I cultivated it in a 26 cm pot (pic 1). I was afraid it wouldn't be enough for an acceptable growth of the plant, but I was wrong.

It's particularly suitable for making the sauce because its pulp is very thick (pic 2), but also as a salad it's worthy of the most superfine palates.

The shape is that of a small date (pic 3), but this variety spotlights a moderate polymorphism of its fruits. On pic 4 you can notice a tomato in close-up with a furrowing on the middle. This isn't unusual in some fruits.

Some tomatoes were affected by blossom-end rot (pic 5). Nothing serious, just few fruits.

The three plants I cultivated yielded notable crops (pic 6).

HAHMS GELBE - Pomodorino nano giallo

Qualche anno fa ho ricevuto dei semi di un pomodorino giallo a crescita determinata nana, l'Hahms Gelbe Topftomate, la cui traduzione dal tedesco è "pomodoro giallo da vaso Hahms".
Può essere coltivato in vasi minuscoli. All'inizio, è fondamentale che riceva molta luce. In questo modo questa varietà crescerà molto piccola, venti centimetri, non di più, ma ne beneficeranno sia il fogliame...

È importante che non sia mangiato quando è giallo brillante: il sapore risulterebbe come quello di un pomodoro verde immaturo. Aspettate che i pomodorini diventino giallo oro/arancio perché solo in questa fase il loro sapore raggiunge il suo stato ottimale.

Sono molto dolci e succosi con una punta di acidità. La pelle è spessa e perciò si conservano a lungo.
Anche se è una pianta nana, suggerisco di mettere a sostegno una cannetta perché nel momento di massima produzione si riempe di tantissimi pomodorini che tendono a tirare giù la pianta con il rischio concreto che il piccolo fusto si spezzi.

L'Hahms Gelbe può essere coltivato anche in casa, sul davanzale di una finestra dove può ricevere molta luce. Personalmente non ci ho mai provato, ma voglio tentare prima o poi.

HAHMS GELBE - A Dwarf Yellow Tomato

A few years ago I got some seeds of a dwarf determinate yellow tomato, the Hahms Gelbe Topftomate; its translation from German is "Hahms pot yellow tomato".

It can be cultivated in tiny pots. At the beginning it's essential that it receives a lot of light. This way this variety will grow very small, no taller than 20 cm, but both the foliage and the yield of small tomatoes will benefit (pics 1 to 3).

It's important you don't eat the small globes when they are bright yellow: their taste would turn out as unripe as that of a green tomato. Just wait until they get golden yellow/orange because only at this stage their taste reaches its optimal state (pic 4).

The fruits are sweet and juicy with a bit of acidity. The skin is thick and for this they keep long (pic 5).

Even if it's a dwarf plant, I suggest to use a small support because when at its most productive period the fruits pull down the plant with a real risk that the small stalk snaps (pic 6).

The Hahms Gelbe tomato can be cultivated indoor on a windowsill where it can get lots of light. I've never tried that, but I will sooner or later.

CAROSELLO TONDO DI MASSAFRA

È strettamente imparentato con il Carosello Tondo Massafrese (vedi qui). Le differenze tra i due sono veramente minime; anzi, posso dire, senza timore di essere smentito, che l'unica differenza riguarda il colore della buccia.
Meglio far parlare le foto: prima il Tondo di Massafra che è verde scuro con poche macchie di verde più chiaro...

...poi il Tondo Massafrese che, al contrario, presenta macchie più evidenti di verde più chiaro su epicarpo verde scuro oppure tracce di verde scuro su epicarpo verde più chiaro, come qualche anno fa suggeriva anche il mio amico americano, il blogger Jay Tracy (vedi qui).

(4) Carosello Tondo Massafrese

A dire il vero, non è raro che su una pianta del Tondo di Massafra spuntino frutti con la buccia identica ad un Tondo Massafrese e viceversa. Guardate i due frutti nella foto 5: sono nati sulla stessa pianta di Tondo di Massafra la scorsa estate, ma quello sulla destra sembra un Tondo Massafrese.

Per il resto, sono praticamente fratelli gemelli: stessa forma tonda, anche se non è insolito vedere frutti ovali e oblunghi; stessa consistenza tra il morbido e il leggermente croccante; stesse solcature marcate in senso verticale; stesso gusto dolce e saporito. Ma quest'ultima caratteristica è comune a molte varietà di caroselli.

Jay Tracy dice che un'altra differenza tra queste due varietà è che il Carosello Tondo di Massafra produce frutti più vicino allo stelo principale. Non ne sono tanto sicuro, come dimostrano le foto 5 e 6.

Allo stesso modo, non sono sicuro che il Carosello Tondo Massafrese produca frutti più lontano dallo stelo principale (vedi qui). In entrambi i casi mi sembra che le due varietà producano frutti lontano dallo stelo principale sulla parte bassa e vicino a esso sulla parte centrale e superiore della pianta. In futuro l'argomento merita un approfondimento coltivando le due varietà lo stesso anno per studiarne meglio le differenze. Probabilmente tra un paio d'anni perché nel 2017 voglio dare spazio ad altre varietà di carosello di cui non ho ancora parlato in questo blog.

Devo ammettere che il mio Carosello Tondo di Massafra non è stato molto prolifico quest'anno, come mostra la tabella sotto: solo otto frutti quando la media è di almeno quindici, probabilmente perché i semi non erano freschissimi.

CAROSELLO ROUND MASSAFRA

It's strictly related to the Carosello Round Massafrese (see here). The differences between the two are marginal; or rather, without fear of being belied, I can say that the only difference concerns the colour of the skin.

The Round Massafra is dark green with few (or without in some cases) splotches of lighter green (pics 1 to 3). On the contrary, the Round Massafrese shows larger splotches of lighter green on a dark green skin (pic 4) or splotches of dark green on a lighter green skin, as my American friend, the blogger Jay Tracy, suggested a few years ago as well (see here).

To tell the truth, it isn't unusual that some fruits with the skin identical to a Round Massafrese show up on a Round Massafra vine and vice versa.This is apparent on pic 5: the two fruits sprang up on a Round Massafra vine last summer, but the one on the right seems a Round Massafrese. Apart from this, they are twins: same round shape, though it isn't rare to see oval and oblong fruits; same soft or slightly crunchy texture; same deep vertical furrows; same sweet and savoury taste. But this latter feature is common to lots of carosello strains.

Jay Tracy says that another difference between these two varieties is that the Carosello Round Massafra vine sets its fruits closer to the main stem, but I'm not sure about that, as shown on pics 5 and 6. I'm not even sure that the Carosello Round Massafrese sets its fruits farther from the main stem (see here). In both cases, it seems to me that the two varieties set their fruits far from the main stem on the lower part and close to it on the central and upper part of the vine. In the future I must go into the matter more thoroughly cultivating both strains in the same year to study the differences in a more appropriate way. Probably in a couple of years because in 2017 I want to make room for other carosello varieties I haven't talked about in this blog yet.

I have to recognize that my Carosello Round Massafra hasn't been very productive this year, as shown in the table below: only eight fruits whereas the average is fifteen at least, probably because the seeds weren't very fresh.

I FIORI DELLA MELANZANA ROSSA DI ROTONDA

Nel mio post sulla Melanzana Rossa di Rotonda non ho fatto cenno ai fiori di questo ortaggio.  Sono ermafroditi e possono essere a cinque, sei o sette petali. I petali sono di un colore bianco candido mentre lo stame è di un giallo intenso. Lo stigma è rosso inizialmente, poi diventa giallo anch'esso. Lo stilo invece è di un giallo paglierino.

THE FLOWERS OF THE ROTONDA RED EGGPLANT

In my post about the Rotonda Red Eggplant, I didn't mention the flowers of this vegetable. They are hermaphroditic and can have five, six or seven petals. 

Its petals are snow-white whereas the stamen is striking yellow. The stigma is red at the beginning, then it gradually gets yellow as well. The style is straw-yellow instead.

POMODORINO TONDINO DI MANDURIA

Non è azzardato definire il Pomodorino Tondino di Manduria uno dei più saporiti pomodori da insalata. Nel suo luogo d'origine, Manduria e dintorni, patria anche di almeno due varietà dei beneamati caroselli, è coltivato con poca acqua. Tecnica impraticabile per la coltivazione sul balcone, come nel caso dei caroselli stessi.
Ha una forma prevalentemente tonda; il peso varia tra 10 e 20-25 grammi mentre il colore è di un rosso vivo.

È molto succoso. In insalata, con caroselli e rucola, è una delizia, ma anche da solo rende felice il palato...

È a crescita determinata, o meglio semideterminata; perciò cresce molto bene anche in vaso sul balcone. La mia pianta ha raggiunto un'altezza di 70 cm.

TOMATO ROUND MANDURIA

It's not hazardous to describe the Tomato Round Manduria as one of the tastiest salad tomato. In its birthplace, Manduria and nearby, land of at least two strains of the beloved carosellos as well, it's cultivated with little water. This is unfeasible for its cultivation on balconies, as in the case of the carosellos themselves.

Its shape is mostly round; its weight ranges from 10 to 20-25 grams whereas its colour is burning red (pics 1 and 2). 

It's very juicy (pic 3). A salad with Tomato Round Manduria, carosellos and rocket is exquisite. But a salad with only these small tomatoes is appetizing as well...

Its habit growth is determinate, or rather semi-determinate; so it grows very well in pots on balconies. My plant reached a height of 70 cm (pic 4).

Production is bountiful. A support is necessary if cultivated in pots because its branches are always loaded with lots of fruits (pics 5 and 6).

CAROSELLO MELONE TARANTINO

Devo ringraziare Angelo Passalacqua di amicidellortodue che lo scorso inverno mi ha mandato i semi di questa varietà. Circa un anno fa lui stesso ha pubblicato un post su questo carosello-melone sul suo blog (vedi qui).
A quanto pare, il Carosello Tarantino assomiglia al melone tradizionale ancor più del Barattiere. Osservate la foglia che è di un verde scuro: ricorda più quella del melone che non quella di un carosello.

La mia pianta ha prodotto cinque frutti. Se sei frutti da una pianta di Barattiere è un buon successo, credo che anche cinque da un Carosello Tarantino sia un risultato soddisfacente.
Il colore della buccia è verde con macchie di verde scuro in rilievo ed è molto coriacea se paragonata a quella dei caroselli. Si fa fatica a sbucciarla; conviene tagliare il frutto a spicchi e mangiarlo come il melone.

Come il carosello, nella sua fase iniziale presenta una fitta peluria che perde gradualmente con la crescita e non presenta ancora nemmeno tracce di verde scuro. Anche queste vengono dopo.

...perciò la prossima volta mi conviene cimare lo stelo principale molto prima che raggiunga i due metri visto che la parte superiore mi sembrava poco propensa a produrre. È probabile che in questo modo la parte inferiore della pianta possa sviluppare altri frutti.

Per finire, l'interno di un frutto; la polpa è tenera quasi quanto quella del Barattiere, ma la morbidezza dipende anche dalle innaffiature abbondanti ed io in questo abbondo.

CAROSELLO TARANTINO

I have to thank Angelo Passalacqua from amicidellortodue who last winter sent me the seeds of this variety. About one year ago he posted about this kind of carosello-melon on his blog (see here).

By the look, the Carosello Melon Tarantino looks like the traditional melon even more than the Barattiere. If you have a look at the leaf, which is dark green, it recalls to mind more that of a melon than that of a Barattiere (pic 1).

My vine produced five fruits. If six fruits from a Barattiere vine is a good success, I believe that five from the Carosello Tarantino is a satisfactory result as well.

The colour of the skin is green with raised darker green splotches (pic 2) and it's tough if compared with that of other carosellos. It's an effort to peel it; it's a good idea to cut the Tarantino fruits into slices like a melon.

As in the case of carosellos, in its initial stage of growth the Carosello Taranto shows a thick fuzz it gradually loses growing; it doesn't even show traces of darker green splotches. They come later as well (pics 3 and 4).

Three out of the five fruits were produced on the lower part of the vine (pics 5 and 6). Thus next time it's worth trimming the main stem long before the vine reaches two metres in height (pic 7) since the upper part isn't inclined to produce. This way the lower part of the vine may  produce more fruits.

On picture 8 is a fruit cut in two. The pulp is almost as tender as that of a Barattiere, but tenderness depends upon abundant watering as well, and I abound in this.

MELANZANA ROSSA DI ROTONDA

(1) Pomodoro Cornucopia del Nord vs. Melanzana Rossa di Rotonda

Non sono due pomodori. Lo è solo quello sulla sinistra; l'altro "pomodoro" è la Melanzana Rossa di Rotonda. Viene coltivata a 500 metri sul livello del mare nella Valle del Mercure di cui Rotonda è uno dei centri. Perciò non teme il clima fresco. Questa valle si trova ai piedi del Massiccio del Pollino, tra la Basilicata e la Calabria.

Questo ortaggio appartiene alla specie Solanum aethiopicum e proprio per la sua somiglianza con il pomodoro è stata ribattezzata merlingiana a pummadora nel dialetto locale.
Coltivare la melanzana rossa sul balcone è un lavoro infame, anche se utilizzate vasi grandissimi. Diversamente dalla coltivazione in piena terra, soffre maledettamente il sole diretto e i fiori fanno fatica ad allegare: appassiscono e cadono molto più del normale. Inoltre sul balcone la Melanzana Rossa di Rotonda viene attaccata dagli afidi e dal ragnetto rosso, appartenente alla famiglia degli acari. Se si ha molta pazienza, le afidi si possono eliminare manualmente alla loro prima comparsa in modo da limitare la loro presenza in seguito. Il ragnetto rosso ama il caldo secco ed è praticamente invisibile. Ci si accorge di lui quando è ormai troppo tardi: la foglia diventa prima marrone, poi ingiallisce, avvizzisce e cade.

Quest'anno ho voluto mettere una pianta nello spazio condominiale. Beh, rispetto al balcone, tutt'altra cosa. Il tremendo ragnetto rosso non ha fatto gli stessi danni che ha fatto nella coltivazione sul balcone. Probabilmente perché tutte le notti parte l'irrigazione automatica condominiale che bagna abbondantemente la pianta. E questo al ragnetto rosso non piace proprio.

Si ha la maturazione completa quando la melanzana perde le striature verdi (foto 14). Non ricordo dove, ma da qualche parte ho letto che può raggiungere un peso 250 grammi. Francamente, mi sembra esagerato. La mia melanzana rossa più grossa ha raggiunto i 121 grammi proprio quest'anno grazie alla pianta che ho messo nello spazio condominiale.

Ha una polpa carnosa che, diversamente dalle altre melanzane, non scurisce una volta tagliata perché ha un basso contenuto di acido clorogenico.

Ha un profumo fruttato intenso che ricorda quello del fico d'India. Il gusto al palato è leggermente piccante e gradevolmente amarognolo. Anche le foglie sono commestibili; il sapore ricorda vagamente quello degli spinaci. L'anno scorso ho voluto provare l'ebbrezza di cucinarle e mangiarle. Devo ammettere che le foglie, contrariamente ai frutti, non mi hanno entusiasmato perché grattavano la gola provocando colpi di tosse. Pazienza, ho voluto provare...

THE ROTONDA RED EGGPLANT

Have a look at picture 1: they aren't two tomatoes. Only the one on the left is. The other "tomato" is the Rotonda Red Aubergine belonging to the species "Solanum aethiopicum". It's cultivated at 500 metres above sea level in Rotonda and nearby, in the Valley of Mercure. This  valley is located at the foot of the Pollino massif, on the border between Basilicata and Calabria, South Italy.

Growing the red eggplant on balconies is a rotten job, even if you make use of big pots. Differently from the cultivation in the open field, it feels greatly the sunlight and flowers hardly set: they wither and fall much more than usual. Moreover, on balconies the Rotonda Red Eggplant is attacked by aphids and red spiders, belonging to mites family. If you have a lot of patience, aphids can be eliminated by hand so to contain them afterwards. Red spiders love a dry and hot climate and they are practically invisible. You notice their presence when it's too late. At first leaves get brown, then they turn yellow, wither away and fall.

This year I've wanted to bed a plant out in the condominial greenery. Well, if compared with the balcony cultivation, it's quite another matter. The terrible spider mite hasn't caused damage as in the balcony cultivation probably because all nights the condominial automatic irrigation system waters the plant abundantly. And the spider mite doesn't like that.

Pics 2 to 10 are the best taken recently in the condominial greenery.

Pics from 11 to 14 show four different stages of ripening. The full ripening is when the red aubergine loses the green stripes (pic 14). I don't remember where I read that its weight can reach 250 grams. Honestly, I think this is excessive. My biggest red aubergine has reached 121 grams just this year on the plant I bedded out in the shared space (pic 15).

The red aubergine has got a fleshy pulp which, differently from the common aubergine, doesn't get dark because it has got a low level of chlorogenic acid (pic 16). Its smell is intense and fruity similar to that of the prickly pear; the taste is slightly spicy and bitter in a pleasant way. Leaves are edible as well; their taste calls to mind that of spinach. Last year I wanted to experience the thrill of cooking and eating them. Contrary to the fruits, I must recognize they didn't enthral me because they scratched my throat causing fits of coughing. Never mind, it was just a try...
