Pensate un po': dopo le piogge abbondanti della settimana scorsa, i miei caroselli erano in uno stato talmente pietoso che stavo per sradicarle tutte. Meno male che non l'ho fatto perché dopo qualche giorno di caldo forte, si sono riprese ed hanno cominciato a produrre:

Guess what?: after the heavy rains of last week, my caroselli vines looked so wretched that I was going to root out all of them. Luckily, I didn't do that because after a few day of sunny days, they have recovered and started yielding.

The Volunteer tomato sprouted a few years ago among some caroselli vines. I saved its seeds and named it "volunteer".

ORTO 2021 - cronaca del 9 giugno

Primi piccoli raccolti dall'orto e dai balconi. Innanzitutto, quello che doveva essere il carosello Tondo Liscio di Manduria. Per essere tondo lo è, liscio pure, ma doveva essere completamente verde, senza quelle macchioline verde scuro. Ricorda molto un altro carosello della famiglia manduriana, il carosello Tondo di Manduria. I solidi danni delle ditte sementiere...

Dagli Stati Uniti, grazie al mio amico Jay Tracy, una delizia che sto coltivando per la prima volta, il cetriolo Arkansas Little Leaf. È una varietà da mettere sott'aceto; io l'ho mangiata fresca appena raccolta. Ottima!

VEGETABLE GARDEN 2021 - report of June 9th

First small harvests in my plot and on my balconies. First of all, what had to be the carosello Round Smooth Manduria (1 to 3): it is round, smooth, but it had to be completely green without those dark green splotches. It brings to mind another carosello of the Manduria family, the Round Manduria. The usual damage of seeds companies.

My American friend Jay Tracy convinced me to try the Arkansas Little Leaf cucumber (4 to 5) which is a suitable variety as under vinegar. I ate it just harvested. Delicious!

To end the today's report, a zucchini variety: Greyzini (6).

TOMATOES 2021 - report of April 4th

A new Sicilian tomato: Ribbed Tomato from Licata. There's no news nowhere about it, so I suppose I have to be the first to start a "literature".

ORTO 2021 - cronaca del 3 aprile

Complice un marzo insolitamente caldissimo, i pomodori sono già pronti per il trapianto in piena terra, ma preferisco aspettare perché è previsto un calo delle temperature.

VEGETABLE GARDEN 2021 - report of the 3rd of April

With the help of an unusual very hot March, my tomatoes are ready to be transplanted in open ground, but I prefer to wait because a drop in temperatures is expected (1).

Meanwhile the caroselli have already sprouted as well. The ones in the photo (2) are intented for the open ground whereas the Carosello Tondo Liscio di Manduria (3) will be transplanted in bigger square pots on the balcony.

Tre varietà sono quasi pronte per essere trapiantate in piena terra: Isole Eolie, Costoluto di Licata (i due vasetti al centro nella foto) e Piennolo del Vesuvio. Comunque, è troppo presto per farlo. Dovrò tenerle al caldo in serra ancora per più di un mese.

TOO EARLY?

Perhaps I sowed the tomatoes too early. Three Italian varieties are almost ready to be transplanted in open ground: Aeolian Islands, Ribbed from Licata (the two pots in the middle in the picture) and Piennolo of Vesuvius. Anyway, It is too early to do it. I will still have to keep them warm in the greenhouse for more than one month.

IL MIO ORTO 2021

Dopo quindici anni di giardinaggio sul balcone, finalmente ho di nuovo un orto. La misura del terreno non è il massimo: è lungo 34 metri e largo 1,20:

MY 2021 PLOT

After fifteen years of gardening on balconies, I have finally a piece of land again. The size is not the best: 34 metres long and only 1,20 large.

Meanwhile, the sowing is going well.

SPUREDDE LECCESI - cronaca del 28 luglio

Dallo scorso anno ho suddiviso la coltivazione dei caroselli in due periodi di semina. Per i caroselli di seconda semina ho voluto coltivare alcune spuredde provenienti dal Salento, la Spuredda Leccese Scura e una Spuredda Striata che ho denominato di mia iniziativa Gallipoli perché i semi che ho avuto provengono da quella città. Non sono originale se dico che le varietà di carosello sono tante e simili tra di loro. Non si può risalire al nome di tutte, così invento dei nomi per poterle distinguerle.

La Spuredda Leccese Scura ha una buccia liscia mentre la Striata presenta delle profonde costolature. Tra le due preferisco la prima: più succosa e saporita.

SPUREDDE LECCESI - report of July 28th

I have split the cultivation of my caroselli into two different sowing times since last year. As second sowing time I have wanted to grow some caroselli from Salento, the Spuredda Leccese Scura (dark) (1) and a Spuredda Striata (striped) (2) I named Gallipoli because the seeds I got come from that town. I'm not original if I say the caroselli varieties are so many and similar one to the other. You cannot find the name of all, so I make up names to distinguish them.

The Spuredda Leccese Scura has a smooth rind whereas the Striata one shows deep furrows. I like the dark spuredda better because it's juicier and tastier.

CAROSELLI, POMODORI E MELANZANE ROSSE - cronaca del 5 luglio

È di tempo di pensare ai semi di carosello per il futuro:

Il frutto si sta ingrossando, ma non è ancora pronto per estrarne i semi (vedi qui per maggiori informazioni su come ottenere semi da un carosello). Lo stesso dicasi per la Meloncella Tonda di Galatina:

Dopo qualche anno sono tornato a coltivare la Melanzana Rossa di Rotonda:

Quest'anno le maggiori soddisfazioni arrivano dai pomodori. Direi che se un ortolano da balcone vuole andare sul sicuro, la Spagnoletta di Gaeta è una delle varietà ideali. Pianta bassa che arriva al massimo ad un metro; frutti che crescono in gruppi di quattro-cinque e che pesano fra i 50 e i 150 grammi; marciume apicale assente:

L'Oaxacan Jewel è una varietà indeterminata che mi ha sorpreso non poco, soprattutto per il suo accentuato polimorfismo: pianta molto produttiva e frutti giallo-arancio che vanno dai 50 ai 200 grammi, anche se in piena terra sembrano che raggiungano dimensioni maggiori:

Oggi ho raccolto anche un frutto di soli 18 grammi, quello raffigurato in mezzo nella foto successiva:

Dalla Sicilia un pomodorino da sugo che raccolto non molto maturo è ottimo anche in insalata:

Un pomodoro che non mi ha entusiasmato, il Blueberry, che oggi mi ha regalato una stranezza:

CAROSELLI, TOMATOES AND RED EGGPLANTS - report of July 5th

It's time to take care of carosello seeds for the future, as shown on pics 1 and 2: the Cucummaru San Donato and the Meloncella Tonda Galatina are getting bigger and bigger, but not enough yet to extract seeds from them (see here for more information about how to have new seeds from caroselli).

After a few years I'm cultivating the Rotonda Red Eggplant again (3).

This year the big satisfaction is coming from tomatoes. If a balcony gardener wants to grow a "reliable" tomato, I suggest the Spagnoletta Gaeta. It's a determinate vine with fruits in clusters of four or five. They weigh 50 to 150 grams in containers on balconies. Blossom end rot is absent (4 and 5).

Another positive surprise is the Oaxacan Jewel tomato: it's indeterminate with a noticeable polymorphism.  It's a very productive variety; the yellow-orange fruits of my only vine weigh 50 to 200 grams, but in the ground it seems it may weigh much more (6). This morning I harvested the smallest, 18 grams: it's the one in the middle on pic 7.

From Sicily a sauce small tomato, the Datterino Siccagno Siciliano. When non very ripe, it's delicious as tomato salad as well (8).

The Blueberry tomato hasn't aroused my enthusiasm, but this morning it gave me an oddity (9).

From Sicily again the other positive surprise of this season: the Ciliegino Siciliano tomato (10). All clusters are very productive: the second one of my vine (I have two vines) has 24 small cherry tomatoes (11).

Finally, this morning's tomato harvest: 920 grams, not bad for a balcony agriculture. Nine different varieties: red, yellow, black and yellow-orange (12).
