SPUREDDA "PUNTEGGIATA" O "MACULATA"?

Qualche tempo fa, il mio amico Jay Tracy mi ha mandato alcuni semi di una varietà di spuredda leccese che è sicuramente frutto di un incrocio:

Ha una forma oblunga come tante altre varietà di spuredda. Ciò che la rende unica è il colore: verde chiaro con una miriade di piccoli puntini verde scuro:

Va da sé che questa nuova varietà ha bisogno di un nome. Avevo pensato a "Spuredda Punteggiata" o "Spuredda Maculata". Opterei per il primo. Quello che conta, tuttavia, è che sia molto produttiva...

...e che abbia un ottimo sapore:

La consistenza è un giusto bilanciamento tra croccantezza e morbidezza.

"SPECKLED" OR "FLECKED" SPUREDDA

Some time ago, my friend Jay Tracy sent me some seeds of a spuredda variety that is surely the result of a cross. Its shape is oblong like many other spuredda varieties. What makes it unique is the colour: light green with a myriad of dark green dots.

It goes without saying that this new variety needs a name. I had thought of  "Speckled Spuredda" or "Flecked Spuredda". I would opt for the first one.

However, what matters is that it is very fruitful and has a delicious flavour. The texture is the right balance between crunchiness and softness.

Pensate un po': dopo le piogge abbondanti della settimana scorsa, i miei caroselli erano in uno stato talmente pietoso che stavo per sradicarle tutte. Meno male che non l'ho fatto perché dopo qualche giorno di caldo forte, si sono riprese ed hanno cominciato a produrre:

Guess what?: after the heavy rains of last week, my caroselli vines looked so wretched that I was going to root out all of them. Luckily, I didn't do that because after a few day of sunny days, they have recovered and started yielding.

DWARF TOMATOES - report of June 10th

The Volunteer tomato sprouted a few years ago among some caroselli vines. I saved its seeds and named it "volunteer".

ORTO 2021 - cronaca del 9 giugno

Primi piccoli raccolti dall'orto e dai balconi. Innanzitutto, quello che doveva essere il carosello Tondo Liscio di Manduria. Per essere tondo lo è, liscio pure, ma doveva essere completamente verde, senza quelle macchioline verde scuro. Ricorda molto un altro carosello della famiglia manduriana, il carosello Tondo di Manduria. I solidi danni delle ditte sementiere...

Li ho raccolti un po' piccoli per permettere agli frutti sulla stessa pianta di svilupparsi:

Dagli Stati Uniti, grazie al mio amico Jay Tracy, una delizia che sto coltivando per la prima volta, il cetriolo Arkansas Little Leaf. È una varietà da mettere sott'aceto; io l'ho mangiata fresca appena raccolta. Ottima!

VEGETABLE GARDEN 2021 - report of June 9th

First small harvests in my plot and on my balconies. First of all, what had to be the carosello Round Smooth Manduria (1 to 3): it is round, smooth, but it had to be completely green without those dark green splotches. It brings to mind another carosello of the Manduria family, the Round Manduria. The usual damage of seeds companies.

My American friend Jay Tracy convinced me to try the Arkansas Little Leaf cucumber (4 to 5) which is a suitable variety as under vinegar. I ate it just harvested. Delicious!

To end the today's report, a zucchini variety: Greyzini (6).

TOMATOES 2021 - report of April 4th

A new Sicilian tomato: Ribbed Tomato from Licata. There's no news nowhere about it, so I suppose I have to be the first to start a "literature".

Complice un marzo insolitamente caldissimo, i pomodori sono già pronti per il trapianto in piena terra, ma preferisco aspettare perché è previsto un calo delle temperature.

VEGETABLE GARDEN 2021 - report of the 3rd of April

With the help of an unusual very hot March, my tomatoes are ready to be transplanted in open ground, but I prefer to wait because a drop in temperatures is expected (1).

Meanwhile the caroselli have already sprouted as well. The ones in the photo (2) are intented for the open ground whereas the Carosello Tondo Liscio di Manduria (3) will be transplanted in bigger square pots on the balcony.

Tre varietà sono quasi pronte per essere trapiantate in piena terra: Isole Eolie, Costoluto di Licata (i due vasetti al centro nella foto) e Piennolo del Vesuvio. Comunque, è troppo presto per farlo. Dovrò tenerle al caldo in serra ancora per più di un mese.

TOO EARLY?

Perhaps I sowed the tomatoes too early. Three Italian varieties are almost ready to be transplanted in open ground: Aeolian Islands, Ribbed from Licata (the two pots in the middle in the picture) and Piennolo of Vesuvius. Anyway, It is too early to do it. I will still have to keep them warm in the greenhouse for more than one month.

IL MIO ORTO 2021

Dopo quindici anni di giardinaggio sul balcone, finalmente ho di nuovo un orto. La misura del terreno non è il massimo: è lungo 34 metri e largo 1,20:

MY 2021 PLOT

After fifteen years of gardening on balconies, I have finally a piece of land again. The size is not the best: 34 metres long and only 1,20 large.

Meanwhile, the sowing is going well.
