Quest'anno sto coltivando tre varietà di melanzane rosse: la Melanzana Rossa di Rotonda, la Melanzana Rossa di Mormanno e la Melanzana Rossa Costoluta.

THE RED EGGPLANTS I'VE PLANTED OUT

This year I've been growing three varieties of red eggplants: the Rotonda Red Eggplant (pic 1), the Mormanno Red Eggplant (pic 2) and the Red Ribbed Eggplant (pic 3).

In the last years the red eggplant cultivation on my balconies hasn't been satisfactory. Or rather, to be honest, it's been disastrous. Ieri pomeriggio, girovagando tra le mie piante, ho notato i primi frutti della stagione, in verità ancora molto piccoli: un Carosello Mezzo Lungo di Polignano...

HERE YOU ARE THE FIRST

While strolling among my plants yesterday afternoon, I noticed the first fruits of the season, in reality still very small: a Carosello Half Long Polignano (pic 1), two Fiaschetto Piccolo tomatoes, a determinate variety from Puglia (pic 2) and two of Tiny Tim, a dwarf tomato strain (pic 3).

The tomatoes will ripe for sure whereas the carosello fruit might turn yellow and fail. It often happens with carosellos. Time will tell...

PRIMO RACCOLTO DI BASILICO...

...e naturalmente primo pesto.

Sono bastati 130 grammi di basilico, un po' di parmigiano, pecorino romano, pinoli, olio extravergine d'oliva, uno spicchio d'aglio e un pizzico di sale per fare dieci porzioni di pesto.

Metà è finito nel congelatore. Il resto per cena. Tutta la famiglia ha apprezzato.

FIRST HARVEST OF BASIL...

...and obviously first pesto sauce. 

130 grams of basil with a little Parmesan and Roman ewe's milk cheese, pine nuts, extra-virgin olive oil, a garlic clove and pinch of salt were enough to make ten helpings of pesto sauce. 

Half of it got to the freezer for next winter. The rest for dinner. All members of my family appreciated.

ALLORA I DOPPIONI SERVONO!

Meno male che non ho regalato i doppioni di carosello (vedi qui). Dopo un inizio promettente, il Carosello Spuredda Tarantino ha cominciato a deperire.

A voler essere sinceri, la pianta non era messa poi così male, ma la sua gemella era molto più sana e robusta essendo rimasta in casa al calduccio più a lungo.

IT'S USEFUL TO KEEP SPARE CAROSELLO PLANTS!

Thanks godness I didn't give my spare carosello plants away (see here). After a bright start, the Carosello Spuredda Tarantino began to have a poor growth (pic 1).

To be honest, the vine wasn't for the high jump so much, but its twin (pics 2 and 3) was healthier and more robust as I kept it warm indoor longer. 

IL POMODORO ITINERANTE

Se potesse parlare, questo pomodoro chiederebbe pietà. Ha viaggiato, insieme ad una pianta gemella, da Scauri, in provincia di Gaeta, a Taranto. Poi da Taranto in Lombardia dove ha fatto qualche tappa intermedia. Da qui probabilmente prenderà la strada per Arezzo, in Toscana. Sto parlando del Pomodoro Spagnoletta; in realtà il nome completo è: Pomodoro Spagnoletta del Golfo di Gaeta e di Formia. Roba da restare senza fiato alla fine della frase! 

A Roma è conosciuto come Pomodoro Casalino. Le sue foglie assomigliano molto a quelle della patata.

La pianta gemella è rimasta su uno dei miei balconi, ma è messa veramente male, nonostante abbia già due bacche. Cercherò di farla riprendere per poter avere semi freschi per l'anno prossimo. Sarebbe un miracolo. Giudicate voi stessi.

THE TRAVELLING TOMATO

If this tomato could talk, it would beg for mercy. Together with a twin plant it travelled from Gaeta in central Italy to Taranto in South Italy. Then from Taranto to Milan in North Italy. Its final destination will probably be Arezzo in Tuscany. I'm talking about the Spagnoletta Tomato (pics 1 and 2); it's native to Gaeta and Formia, two small cities south of Rome where it's called Casalino Tomato; its leaves look like those of potato.

I have kept the twin plant for myself. Even if it's got two small tomatoes on it, it's in a precarious state. I'll try to recover it to save fresh seeds for next year. It would be a miracle. You can judge for yourself from pics 3 and 4. I'll have to sweat to make it presentable.

Ieri pomeriggio primo raccolto di rucola: solo trenta grammi che hanno reso più gustosa l'insalata.

THE FIRST HARVEST OF ROCKET

Yesterday afternoon the first harvest of rocket: just thirty grams that made the salad tastier.

I'll have to drive back the attack of damned maggots shortly. It'll be a no-holds-barred fight using only my hands.

UN PICCOLO AGGIORNAMENTO

Nonostante la primavera si sia ricordata di fare il suo dovere (clima fresco, a tratti freddo, e non caldo come se fossimo a giugno), le mie piantine stanno resistendo. I pomodori e le melanzane meglio dei caroselli.

Tra gli osservati speciali c'è il Black Cherry. Non so se è determinato o indeterminato. Di solito il Black Cherry è indeterminato, ma mi è stato detto che questo è determinato.

Quando ho scattato la foto successiva un paio di giorni fa, il Carosello Spuredda Tarantino era in sofferenza per il caldo eccessivo. Sul balcone il sole caldo diventa torrido per le piante anche in primavera.

A SMALL UPDATE

Even if the weather is finally springlike (cool, at intervals cold, and not so hot as in June), my plants are soldering on. The tomatoes and eggplants are doing better than the carosellos.

Among the tomatoes I want to keep a close eye on the Black Cherry (pic 2). I don't know if it's a determinate or indeterminate strain. Black Cherries tomatoes are usually indeterminate, but I was told that this is determinate. 

On pic 3 is the Claveria Long Purple Eggplant which is native to the Philippines. Its leaves are often upright at its early stage of growth. On pic 4 the Thai Green Round Eggplant is spotlighted.

When I took picture 5 a couple of days ago, the Carosello Spuredda Tarantino was suffering for the very hot weather. On balconies a warm sun can turn torrid not only in summer but also in spring.

The Barese Round Carosello on pic 6 is growing healthy and robust.
