CAROSELLO TONDO DI MANDURIA - cronaca del 31 maggio

Coltivo caroselli ormai da quasi due decenni, ma mi sorprendono ancora perché ogni varietà si comporta quasi sempre diversamente da un anno all'altro. Ad esempio, il Carosello Tondo di Manduria che sto coltivando quest'anno sta sviluppando una gran quantità di frutti alla base della pianta:

Credo che sia questo il motivo per cui la pianta è ancora piuttosto bassa: si sta concentrando sullo sviluppo dei frutti e meno su se stessa.

In questo periodo dovrebbe essere il contrario, come sta accadendo per le altre varietà che sto coltivando. Poco male...

MANDURIA ROUND CAROSELLO

I've been cultivating caroselli for almost two decades by now, but they still surprise me because every variety almost always behaves differently year over year. For instance, the Manduria Round Carosello I'm cultivating this year is producing a large amount of fruits in the lower part of the vine (1 to 4).

I believe this is the reason why the vine is still rather low (5): it is more interested in the growth of the its fruits than in its own. On this period it's usually quite the contrary as it's occurring to the other varieties I'm cultivating. Not bad...

POMODORO TAXI YELLOW - cronaca del 30 maggio

Dagli Stati Uniti un pomodoro giallo: Taxi Yellow. La pianta è alta appena 70 cm e credo che abbia finito il suo sviluppo, ma i frutti sembrano voler raggiungere dimensioni importanti:

From the United States a yellow tomato: Taxi Yellow. The vine is just 70 cm tall and I think its growth is over, but it seems that its fruits want to turn the scales at an amazing weight.

CUCUMMARU DI SAN DONATO - cronaca del 29 maggio

Primo carosello della stagione in via di maturazione:

È lungo appena 8 cm, ma credo che nel giro di tre-quattro giorni sarà pronto per essere raccolto. La pianta è alta 150 cm. Sarà cimata quando arriva a 2 metri:

CUCUMMARU DI SAN DONATO - report of May 29th

First carosello of the season on the road to ripening. It's just 8 cm long, but in three or four days' time will be ready to be harvested. The vine is 150 cm tall. It will be pruned when it reaches 2 metres.

POMODORO OAXACAN JEWEL - cronaca del 26 maggio

L'anno scorso ho avuto da Angelo Passalacqua i semi di un pomodoro molto raro e dal nome intrigante: Oaxacan Jewel. L'ho seminato pieno di dubbi perché i pomodori di pezzatura elevata non hanno mai fatto una grande riuscita in vaso, seppur grande: immancabilmente vengono colpiti da marciume apicale. A quanto pare, invece, il mio Oaxacan Jewel sta crescendo bene. Mi piace pensare che sia merito dei tanti gusci di uovo polverizzati che ho mischiato al terriccio:

Qui si vede più chiaramente la pezzatura che ha già raggiunto. Assomiglia a un Cuor di Bue, ma a maturazione diventa giallo-arancio:

OAXACAN JEWEL TOMATO - report of May 25th

Last year I got from Angelo Passalacqua some seeds of a rare tomato with an intriguing name: Oaxacan Jewel. I was very doubtful when I sowed it because big sized tomatoes have always unsuccessful in pots even when containers are very large and deep: inevitably they are affected by blossom end rot. As far as I know, on the contrary, my Oaxacan Jewel is thriving well. I like to think that it's thanks to all powdered egg-shells I mixed with the soil.

The vine is indeterminate. So far mine has reached 110 cm. When ripe, the colour of Oaxacan Jewel tomato is yellow-orange.

Solo un piccolo aggiornamento dai miei caroselli:

Sono quattro o cinque. Non tutti giungeranno a maturazione, ma presto avrò i primi frutti da mangiare.

CAROSELLI - report of the 20th of May

Just a small update from my caroselli. On (1) the way they were yesterday; on (2) how they appeared on the 30th of April.

Only the San Donato Cucummaru (3) allows some small fruits to be half-seen by now (4). They are just four or five. Not all of them will ripen, but soon I'll have the first fruits to eat.

Coltivare sul balcone è comodo. Ha senza dubbio i suoi vantaggi, ma appena posso, cerco di ritagliarmi uno spazio nel verde condominiale, soprattutto quando mi servono semi freschi. In questo caso melanzane rosse e alcune varietà rare di carosello:

COMMUNAL GREENERY - report of the 8th of May

Cultivating on balconies is comfortable. Without a doubt there are advantages, but as soon as I can I try to find some space in the communal greenery, mainly when I need to save seeds. In this case, red eggplants and some carosello rare varieties.

Quest'anno sono in vena di esperimenti in quanto a pomodori: Indigo Blue e Blueberry, due cosiddetti pomodori blu. Sono curioso di scoprire quali sono le differenze tra queste due varietà.

BLUE TOMATOES - report of the 3rd of May

This year I'm in the mood for experiments as regards tomatoes: Indigo Blue and Blueberry, two so-called blue tomatoes. I'm curious to find out the differences between these two varieties.

On the Blueberry vine the first tomatoes have already shown up (pic 4).

Un aggiornamento dal fronte caroselli. La crescita procede bene, nonostante in questo periodo prendano il sole soltanto dalle 14,00 alle 18,00. Più avanti, guadagneranno più o meno un'ora:

An update about my caroselli. Their growth is going well, although they get the heat of the sun only from 14,00 to 18,00 by now. Later on, they'll earn one hour or so.

In this stage of growth it's hard to distinguish them. Were it not for the labels on the pots...

RED EGGPLANTS - report of the 24th of April

In the last three weeks my red eggplants have grown a lot: on picture 1 the way they were three weeks ago; on pictures 2 to 4 the way they looked yesterday.

Una varietà nana che non manca mai sui miei balconi: l'Hahms Gelbe Topftomate. Non cresce mai oltre i 20 cm. Basta un vaso molto piccolo per coltivarla. Forse ho esagerato: ho messo le tre piantine in vasi da 26 cm di diametro:

TOMATOES - report of the 20th of April

A small update about some of my tomatoes: Blueberry is one the few I've already put in its final pot (1). 

On picture 2 are Oaxacan, Cerveteri Casilino, Taxi Yellow. 

On pictures 3 and 4 is a dwarf variety that is never away from my balconies: Hahms Gelbe Topftomate. It never grows over 20 cm. A small pot is enough to cultivate it. Perhaps I overdid: I put my three vines in 26 cm pots.

On picture 4 are Indigo Blue, Italian Black Cherry, Sicilian Cherry, Black Cherry.

A few minutes ago I bedded out the first carosello of the season, the San Donato Cucummaru, twenty-one days since its sowing.

MELANZANE ROSSE - cronaca del 5 aprile

Dieci piantine di Melanzana Rossa di Rotonda e nove di Melanzana Rossa di Mormanno Calabro. La cosa divertente è che nessuna sarà coltivata sui miei balconi. Dopo i primi due anni in cui hanno fatto una buona riuscita (ottima addirittura il primo anno nel 2013), ormai risulta impossibile coltivarle sui balconi. Le piante crescono bene, ma i frutti non allegano: seccano e cadono. Così ho deciso di fare Guerilla Gardening (con tutti i disagi e pericoli del caso) o regalarli a qualche amico ortolano con la speranza di fare una buona quantità di semi freschi.

RED EGGPLANT - report of the 5th of April

Ten plants of Rotonda Red Eggplant and nine of Mormanno Red Eggplant. The funny thing is that none of them will be grown on my balconies. After the first two years when they had a good success (even amazing the first year in 2013), it's impossible by now to cultivate them on balconies. Vines grows well, but flowers don't set: they dry out and fall down. This is why I've decided to do Guerrilla Gardening (with all inconvenience and dangers you may have in this case) or give them away to some gardener friends trusting that we'll have a good quantity of fresh seeds.

POMODORI - cronaca del 28 marzo

Dopo il disastro dell'anno scorso, quest'anno i pomodori mi vogliono stupire. Li ho seminati con largo anticipo e, complici parecchie giornate di bel tempo, ho dovuto fare un secondo rinvaso ad alcune piante: seminate in contenitori a cellette; poi rinvasate in vasi da 10 cm; quindi in quelli da 26 cm. Tra un mesetto li metterò nei loro contenitori definitivi.

È la prima volta che coltivo il Blueberry. Già si intravede una sua caratteristica: le foglie diventano  progressivamente molto scure, tra il nero e il bluastro.

TOMATO - report of the 28th of March

After last year's disaster, my tomatoes want to amaze me this year. I sowed them very early and aided by many days of nice weather, I had to repot some vines again: sown in cell-trays; afterwards repotted in 10 cm pots; then in those ones of 26 cm. In a month or so, I'll put them in their final containers.

It's the first time I grow the Blueberry Tomato. You can already make out one of  its features: its leaves get gradually very dark, between black and bluish.

CAROSELLI - cronaca del 21 marzo

Come l'anno scorso, ho fatto coincidere il primo giorno di primavera con la prima semina di caroselli. Grazie ad Angelo Passalacqua, sono riuscito ad avere i semi di due varietà salentine rare, il Cucummaru di San Donato e la Meloncella Tonda di Galatina, praticamente sconosciute al di fuori dei loro luoghi d'origine. "Cucummaru" e "Meloncella" sono alcuni tra i molti termini locali salentini per indicare i caroselli.

As last year, I've made the first sowing of caroselli coincide with the first day of springtime. Thanks to Angelo Passalacqua, I got two rare varieties seeds from Salento, the San Donato Cucummaru and the Galatina Round Meloncella, practically unknown outside their place of origin. Both words, "Cucummaru" and "Meloncella", are among the many local terms to indicate "Caroselli".

CAROSELLO BARESE - coltivato nel 2019

Il CAROSELLO BARESE assomiglia al Carosello Bianco Leccese. Il primo è un po' più tondeggiante, tendente all'ovale, mentre i frutti del secondo possono assumere le forme più disparate. Tuttavia, il discorso sui caroselli è sempre relativo: tu fai un'attenta analisi di una varietà, ma puoi essere smentito l'anno successivo:

I frutti crescono molto vicino allo stelo principale:

Ma qualcuno non disdegna nemmeno gli steli secondari:

Polpa tenera e succosa con placenta e semi edibili che danno un sapore più generoso a questa e ad altre varietà varietà:

THE CAROSELLO BARESE

The CAROSELLO BARESE looks like the Carosello Bianco Leccese. The former is a little bit rounder, verging on oval, whereas the latter's fruits assume the most different shapes. Anyway, everything you can say about caroselli is always partial: you carry out a careful analysis about a variety, but you may be proved wrong the following year.

The Carosello Barese fruits grow tied to the main stem (pics 1, 2, 3 and 4), but some of them thrive on the side branches as well (5 and 6).

Its flesh is tender and juicy with the placenta and seeds giving a more delicious taste as in the case of other caroselli strains (7). Fruits have to be harvested when they have the shape of a big peach (8). 

SPUREDDA LECCESE SCURA - coltivata nel 2019

Un altro carosello coltivato la scorsa estate: la SPUREDDA LECCESE SCURA. Una caratteristica è la sua fitta peluria:

Il suo colore è verde scuro con macchie irregolari di verde. Come molte altre varietà, ha un polimorfismo molto accentuato. La sua forma regolare, tuttavia, è cilindrica, come il frutto nella foto 1 o quello a sinistra nella foto 2. Inoltre, come nel Carosello Tondo Barese, i frutti della Spuredda Leccese Scura crescono molto vicino allo stelo principale:

La polpa molto è a metà tra il tenero e il croccante.

DARK SPUREDDA LECCESE

Another carosello I cultivated last summer was the DARK SPUREDDA LECCESE. One of its features is a thick fuzz (pic 1).

Its colour is dark green with irregular green spots. As a lot of other varieties, it has a very marked polymorphism. Anyway, its regular shape is cylindrical like the fruit on picture 1 or the one on the left on picture 2.

As in the case of the Carosello Tondo Barese, the Dark Spuredda Leccese fruits grow very close to the main stem (pics 2 to 6). Its flesh is half way between tender and crisp.
